John 19:30
As Jesus hung on the cross, beaten, bleeding, and bearing the weight of the world’s sin, He cried out one final word—not in defeat, but in divine triumph:
“It is finished.”
Just three words in English. One word in Greek: “Tetelestai.” A single word that echoed through history, split the veil in the temple, and crushed the head of the serpent. This was not a sigh of resignation—it was a shout of victory.
1️⃣ The Context: The Cross as the Culmination
Jesus had lived a sinless life, fulfilled the Law, resisted every temptation, healed the sick, raised the dead, and preached the gospel of the Kingdom. Now, on the cross, He would finish what no one else could: the work of redemption.
John 19:30 – “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
This was not the end of His life. It was the completion of His mission.
2️⃣ The Word: “Tetelestai”
🧠 Greek Word Study:
Tetelestai (τετέλεσται) – Perfect tense of “teleō,” meaning “to bring to completion, to accomplish fully, to fulfill.” It was used on receipts and legal documents to mean: “Paid in full.”
Jesus didn’t say, “I am finished.” He said, “It is finished.”
He wasn’t defeated—He was declaring that the plan of salvation, the penalty of sin, and the power of death had all been satisfied.
3️⃣ What Was Finished?
- ✅ The work of atonement – Sin’s price fully paid (Isaiah 53:5–6)
- ✅ The fulfillment of prophecy – Over 300 Messianic prophecies (Luke 24:44)
- ✅ The defeat of Satan – The serpent’s head crushed (Genesis 3:15)
- ✅ The old covenant sacrifices – No more lambs needed (Hebrews 10:10–14)
- ✅ Access to God opened – The veil torn in two (Matthew 27:51)
Everything necessary for salvation was finished on that cross.
📖 Scriptures That Confirm the Victory of the Cross
- Colossians 2:14–15 – “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances… nailing it to his cross…”
- Hebrews 9:12 – “He entered once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption.”
- Romans 5:9 – “Being now justified by his blood…”
- 1 Peter 3:18 – “Christ… suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust…”
- Revelation 5:9 – “Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood…”
4️⃣ What It Means for You
Because Jesus said, “It is finished…”
- 🕊️ You don’t have to earn salvation – it is received by faith.
- 🩸 You are no longer condemned – your debt is paid in full.
- ⛓️ You are no longer a slave to sin – the chains are broken.
- 💬 You have full access to God – the veil has been torn.
Romans 8:1 – “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”
🧭 Final Reflection: Rest in the Finished Work
“It is finished.” These three words are the foundation of the gospel. They mean there’s nothing left to earn, nothing left to prove, and nothing left undone.
Every other religion says, “Do.” Jesus says, “Done.”
Rest in that. Rejoice in that. Share that.
The cross has the final word—and the word is victory.
