John 11:25
Lazarus was dead. Four days sealed in a tomb. Mary and Martha were grieving. The crowd was confused. And Jesus had delayed. But when He arrived in Bethany, He didnāt start with sympathyāHe spoke with certainty:
āI am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.ā (John 11:25)
This isnāt just a promise about the future. Itās a declaration of present power. Jesus doesnāt say He gives resurrectionāHe is resurrection.
1ļøā£ The Grief of Death
Martha said, āLord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.ā (v. 21) Her statement was honestābut it was limited by time. She believed in what Jesus could have done, not what He still could do.
Jesus meets her grief with glory. Not by avoiding her pain, but by redefining it.
John 11:23 ā āThy brother shall rise again.ā
Martha nods. She believes in the last day. But Jesus has more than the end in mind. He is about to show her that life is not postponed when He is present.
2ļøā£ The Power of the āI Amā
Jesus says, āI am the resurrection and the life.ā
š§ Greek Insight:
āEgÅ eimiā (į¼Ī³Ļ εἰμι) ā āI AMā echoes Godās name in Exodus 3:14. This is more than identityāitās divinity.
This is the fifth of Jesusā seven āI AMā statements in Johnās Gospel. He is not claiming to know the way to lifeāHe is life. He doesnāt promise eventual resurrectionāHe is resurrection.
š” Life and resurrection are not eventsāthey are a Person.
3ļøā£ The Hope Beyond the Grave
āHe that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.ā
Death is not the end for those who believe. Faith in Christ doesnāt just delay deathāit defeats it.
- Romans 6:23 ā āThe gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.ā
- 1 Corinthians 15:55 ā āO death, where is thy sting?ā
- 2 Corinthians 5:8 ā āAbsent from the body⦠present with the Lord.ā
Jesus offers more than comfortāHe offers conquest.
š Scriptures That Confirm Resurrection Life
- John 5:24 ā āHe that heareth my word⦠hath everlasting life.ā
- 1 Thessalonians 4:16 ā āThe dead in Christ shall rise first.ā
- Philippians 3:10ā11 ā āThat I may know Him⦠and the power of His resurrection.ā
- Revelation 1:18 ā āI am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermoreā¦ā
4ļøā£ The Response Jesus Seeks
āBelievest thou this?ā (John 11:26)
Jesus wasnāt just speaking truthāHe was calling for trust. This statement demands a response.
Martha answered, āYes, Lord: I believeā¦ā (v. 27)
Her theology became personal. Her faith moved from theory to trust. And soon, her brother walked out of the tomb.
š§ Final Reflection: Life Wins
Death whispers, āItās over.ā
Jesus declares, āI am the resurrection and the life.ā
For those who trust in Him, death is not a periodāitās a comma.
In Christ, cemeteries become waiting rooms. Grief becomes temporary. And lifeāeternal lifeāhas the final word.
Do you believe this?
