Genesis 13 continues the story of Abram’s journey of faith. After faltering in Egypt, Abram returns to the land and faces a new test—conflict with Lot. Instead of grasping for control, Abram demonstrates faith that yields, and God responds by reaffirming and expanding His promises.
1️⃣ The Return – Worship Restored (Genesis 13:1–4)
ESV: “So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb. Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, to the place where he had made an altar at the first. And there Abram called upon the name of the Lord.”
KJV: “And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south. And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai; Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.”
- Back to Bethel – Abram retraces his steps to the altar he had built earlier (Genesis 12:8).
- Worship Restored – After his stumble in Egypt, Abram returns to calling on the Lord.
📍 Bethel – House of God
Hebrew: Beit-El (בֵּית־אֵל) – literally “House of God.”
1️⃣ Geographical Bethel
- Located about 10 miles north of Jerusalem, near Ai.
- Abram built an altar there when he first entered Canaan (Genesis 12:8; 13:3–4).
- Jacob renamed Luz as Bethel after his dream of the ladder reaching heaven (Genesis 28:19).
- Later, it became a place of false worship under Jeroboam’s golden calf (1 Kings 12:28–33).
2️⃣ Theological Bethel
- Encounter with God: Jacob declared, “Surely the Lord is in this place… This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:16–17).
- Dwelling of God: Bethel symbolizes God’s desire to dwell with His people.
- Fulfilled in Christ: Believers are now God’s temple: “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16).
💡 Insight: Bethel reminds us that worship is not about a location but about God’s presence. In Christ, every believer becomes a living Bethel—a dwelling place of God by the Spirit.
💡 Devotional Insight
When we fail, the way forward is often the way back—back to prayer, back to worship, back to God’s presence.
2️⃣ The Rift – Strife in the Family (Genesis 13:5–9)
ESV: “And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together… Then Abram said to Lot, ‘Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen. Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.’”
📖 Genesis 13:5–9 (KJV)
5 And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.
6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
- Problem: Prosperity created tension—the land could not sustain both households.
- Principle: Abram yielded the first choice to Lot, showing faith in God’s provision.
Parallel: Philippians 2:3–4 calls us to humility, “in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
3️⃣ The Rivalry – Lot’s Choice of Sight (Genesis 13:10–13)
ESV: “And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other. Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.”
- Lot lived by sight, not by faith. He chose based on appearances, not on God’s promises.
- Abram trusted God. He did not need to grasp—he trusted God’s word.
- Warning: Worldly prosperity often hides spiritual danger (Lot pitched near Sodom).
4️⃣ The Reward – God’s Confirmation (Genesis 13:14–18)
ESV: “The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, ‘Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.’ So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.”
- Faith Rewarded: After Abram yielded, God confirmed His promise.
- Promise Expanded: God now promises countless descendants, as numerous as dust.
- Worship Continued: Abram built another altar at Hebron.
📌 Application
When we release control and trust God, He always proves faithful. Faith that yields is never faith that loses.
🧭 Life Application
- 🔄 Return to Worship – After failure, come back to the altar.
- 🤲 Relinquish Control – Faith lets go of rights, trusting God to provide.
- 👀 Resist Shortcuts – Don’t live by sight like Lot—seek God’s wisdom.
- 🌱 Rest in God’s Promises – God will always confirm His word to His people.
✍️ Alliterated Outline
- The Return – Worship Restored (vv. 1–4)
- The Rift – Strife in the Family (vv. 5–9)
- The Rivalry – Lot’s Choice of Sight (vv. 10–13)
- The Reward – God’s Confirmation (vv. 14–18)
📌 Takeaway Truth
Faith that yields is never faith that loses. Abram gave Lot the first choice, but God gave Abram the better promise. When we walk by faith, we don’t need to fight for position—God Himself is our portion.
