🍽️ When Jesus Came to Supper: Covenant in the Cup

Luke 22:14–23; Matthew 26:17–30; Mark 14:12–26; John 13:1–17

📖 The Scripture

“And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, ‘I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.’ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, ‘Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’ And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.’” (Luke 22:14–20, ESV)

🔍 Background

The Last Supper was more than a farewell meal — it was the transformation of Passover into the Lord’s Supper. For centuries, Israel had remembered God’s deliverance from Egypt by the blood of the lamb. Now, Jesus revealed Himself as the true Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). He redefined bread and cup, not as symbols of Egypt’s deliverance, but as signs of His own body and blood. At this table, the old covenant met its fulfillment, and the new covenant was sealed.

🟪 Supper Insights

🍞 Bread Broken – “This is my body, which is given for you” (Luke 22:19). Christ gave not just words, but Himself. The broken bread points to His sacrificial body.

🍷 Cup Poured – “This cup… is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20). His blood sealed what the old sacrifices could never secure — eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12).

🧺 Example of Humility – John records that Jesus also washed His disciples’ feet that night (John 13:5). The Servant-King gave them both covenant and example: love one another as I have loved you (John 13:34).

✝️ Typology and Theology

  • The True Passover Lamb – Just as Israel was spared by the lamb’s blood (Exodus 12:13), believers are saved by the blood of Christ. “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).
  • The New Covenant – Promised in Jeremiah 31:31–34, fulfilled at this table: forgiveness written not on tablets of stone but on hearts by the Spirit.
  • The Anticipated Feast – Jesus said He would not drink again until the kingdom comes (Luke 22:18). The Supper looks forward to the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9).

📌 Life Application

  • 🙏 Remember the Cost – Every time we break bread and drink the cup, we proclaim His death until He comes (1 Corinthians 11:26). Never let the Supper become routine.
  • ❤️ Love Through Service – As Jesus washed feet, so must we lower ourselves in love, for true greatness is found in service.
  • 🌅 Live in Anticipation – Each Lord’s Table is a rehearsal for the day when faith becomes sight, and we drink with Him in His kingdom.

🟦 Sermon Outline (Alliterated)

  1. The Preparation – The Passover Arranged (Luke 22:7–13)
  2. The Passion – “I Have Desired This Supper” (Luke 22:14–16)
  3. The Proclamation – “This Is My Body” (Luke 22:19)
  4. The Promise – “The New Covenant in My Blood” (Luke 22:20)
  5. The Prospect – “Until the Kingdom Comes” (Luke 22:18)

💡 Reflection

At the Last Supper, the shadow of Passover gave way to the substance of Christ. The disciples left that room bewildered, but within hours they would see the broken body and shed blood that gave the bread and cup their meaning. Today, every believer sits at that same table in remembrance and hope. The covenant is sealed. The cup is poured. And one day, the feast will be finished in the kingdom of God.
