Luke 24:28–35
📖 The Scripture
“So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?’ And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.” (Luke 24:28–35, ESV)
🔍 Background
Two disciples, disheartened and confused after the crucifixion, were walking the road to Emmaus. They had heard rumors of resurrection but remained in doubt. Jesus Himself joined them, though they did not recognize Him. He opened the Scriptures, showing how the Law and the Prophets pointed to His suffering and glory. Yet recognition did not come until the supper — when He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. In that moment, their eyes were opened, and their despair was turned to burning joy.
🟪 Supper Insights
🔥 Hearts Burning – The Word prepared their hearts before their eyes were opened. “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road?” (Luke 24:32).
🍞 Bread Broken – Recognition came “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:35). Ordinary acts became extraordinary when performed by the risen Christ.
🚶 Hope Rekindled – They returned to Jerusalem “that same hour” (Luke 24:33). Fearful retreat turned into bold return once they had seen the Risen Lord.
✝️ Typology and Theology
- The Word and the Table – Jesus opened the Scriptures (Luke 24:27) and then opened their eyes at the table (Luke 24:31). Both Word and Supper testify to Christ.
- The Pattern of Revelation – Their experience mirrors the church’s worship: Word proclaimed, table shared, Christ revealed.
- The Presence of the Risen Lord – Though He vanished from their sight, He remained in their hearts. “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
📌 Life Application
- 📖 Stay Close to the Word – Before they saw Him, they heard Him. The Scriptures prepare us to recognize Jesus in every circumstance.
- 🍽️ Expect Him at the Table – Christ is often recognized in the simple breaking of bread, in ordinary places. Invite Him to your table, and He will reveal Himself.
- 🏃 Return with Joy – Like the Emmaus disciples, once our eyes are opened, we must run to tell others, “The Lord has risen indeed!” (Luke 24:34).
🟦 Sermon Outline (Alliterated)
- The Road – A Journey of Confusion (Luke 24:13–24)
- The Revelation – Scriptures Opened (Luke 24:25–27)
- The Request – “Stay With Us” (Luke 24:28–29)
- The Recognition – Eyes Opened at Supper (Luke 24:30–31)
- The Response – Burning Hearts, Running Feet (Luke 24:32–35)
💡 Reflection
Jesus turned a discouraged walk into a joyful witness. Their hearts burned as He opened the Word, and their eyes opened as He broke the bread. Even when He vanished, the fire remained. Supper with Jesus does not end when He leaves the table — it continues as we rise and tell others: He is risen indeed.
