🍽️ When Jesus Came to Supper: The Better Portion

Luke 10:38–42; John 12:1–8

📖 The Scripture

“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:38–42, ESV)

“Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” (John 12:1–3, ESV)

🔍 Background

Bethany became one of Jesus’ most cherished places. In Martha’s home, Jesus experienced both service and worship. Martha was hospitable but anxious; Mary was still, sitting at His feet. Later, in a dinner after Lazarus’ resurrection, Martha again served, but this time Mary’s devotion deepened — she poured out costly perfume on His feet, preparing Him for burial. The supper table at Bethany shows us both the tension of misplaced priorities and the beauty of undistracted devotion.

🟪 Supper Insights

🪑 The Better Seat – Mary “sat at the Lord’s feet” (Luke 10:39). Position matters — not where we serve, but where we sit.

🍲 The Burden of Busyness – “Martha was distracted with much serving” (Luke 10:40). Service without stillness leads to weariness without worship.

🌹 The Fragrance of Faith – “The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume” (John 12:3). Mary’s offering lingered long after the meal. True worship leaves a fragrance that fills the house of God.

✝️ Typology and Theology

  • The Good Portion – Jesus said, “Mary has chosen the good portion” (Luke 10:42). This recalls Psalm 16:5: “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup.” Christ Himself is the believer’s inheritance.
  • Anointing Before Burial – Mary’s act in John 12 prefigures Christ’s death. As others plotted betrayal, she prepared Him with love.
  • Contrast of Crowds – The world’s rulers sought to kill Jesus, but in Bethany He was honored. At the table we decide whether to conspire against Him or pour ourselves out before Him.

📌 Life Application

  • 🙏 Choose the Better Portion – In a world of endless tasks, sit at His feet. Serving is good, but stillness is essential.
  • 🌿 Worship Must Be Costly – Mary gave a year’s wages of perfume (John 12:3). Do we bring to Jesus what costs us nothing, or do we pour out our best?
  • 🏠 Fill the House with Christ – Mary’s devotion “filled the house” (John 12:3). Our homes, our churches, our lives should carry the aroma of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:15).

🟦 Sermon Outline (Alliterated)

  1. The Welcome – Martha Received Him (Luke 10:38)
  2. The Word – Mary Sat at His Feet (Luke 10:39)
  3. The Worry – Martha Was Distracted (Luke 10:40–41)
  4. The Worth – Mary Chose the Good Portion (Luke 10:42)
  5. The Worship – Mary Anointed His Feet (John 12:3)

💡 Reflection

Jesus did not rebuke Martha for serving — He corrected her for being anxious. The better portion was not in the kitchen but at His feet. In Bethany, the fragrance of worship filled the house. May our lives be Bethanys for Jesus — places where He is welcomed, adored, and prepared for glory.
