🐑 Behold the Lamb of God

John 1:29

It may be the most powerful one-line sermon ever preached. In one Spirit-filled sentence, John the Baptist introduces Jesus—not merely as a rabbi, prophet, or miracle worker, but as the sacrifice that will change eternity:

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

This is more than a poetic phrase. It is a revelation of Jesus’ identity, His mission, and His method. In just a few words, John preaches the entire gospel.

1️⃣ Behold – A Call to Attention and Adoration

“Behold” is not a casual suggestion—it’s a command to stop and stare in awe. John is saying, “Fix your eyes on Him. Don’t miss this.”

It echoes the prophetic language of Scripture:

  • Isaiah 7:14 – “Behold, a virgin shall conceive…”
  • Zechariah 9:9 – “Behold, your king comes to you…”
  • Isaiah 42:1 – “Behold my servant, whom I uphold…”

To behold Jesus is to recognize Him for who He truly is—not merely a man, but the divine Lamb sent by the Father.

2️⃣ The Lamb of God – The Fulfillment of Every Sacrifice

John the Baptist, the son of a priest, knew the sacrificial system intimately. He had seen lambs offered daily on the altar for sin. Now he sees the true Lamb—not brought by man to God, but sent by God to man

From Genesis to Revelation, the Lamb theme unfolds:

  • 🔍 Genesis 22: Abraham says, “God will provide Himself a lamb.”
  • 🩸 Exodus 12: The Passover lamb’s blood protects from death.
  • 🛐 Isaiah 53: “He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter…”
  • 👑 Revelation 5: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain…”

Jesus is not a lamb. He is the Lamb—God’s Lamb.

🔍 Word Study

ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ (amnos tou Theou) – “The Lamb of God”
Unique in Scripture, this title defines Jesus’ core purpose: to be the perfect, pure, permanent sacrifice for sin.

3️⃣ Takes Away – The Power of His Atonement

John doesn’t say Jesus will cover sin temporarily—he says He will take it away. The Greek word here, airō, means to lift, remove, carry off, take away entirely.

This is what the blood of bulls and goats could never do (Hebrews 10:4). But the Lamb of God would do once and for all:

  • Hebrews 9:26 – “He appeared once for all… to put away sin.”
  • 1 John 3:5 – “He was manifested to take away our sins…”
  • Psalm 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west…”

The cross didn’t just shift your sin—it erased it.

4️⃣ The Sin of the World – A Universal Gospel

This one phrase shattered centuries of ethnic exclusivity. The Messiah wasn’t just for Israel. He came for the whole world—Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, moral and immoral.

John doesn’t say “sins” (plural), but “sin” (singular)—the root, the curse, the great cancer of humanity.

  • 1 John 2:2 – “He is the propitiation… for the sins of the whole world.”
  • Isaiah 53:6 – “The Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
  • Revelation 7:9 – A multitude from every nation worships the Lamb.

No one is outside His reach. The Lamb was slain for all who will believe.

📝 Preaching Note: This one-line sermon is enough to launch a lifetime of ministry. It is evangelism in a sentence. If you have one message—make it this one.

📖 Scriptures That Confirm This Gospel Truth

  • Isaiah 53:5–6 – “He was wounded for our transgressions…”
  • Hebrews 10:10 – “Sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
  • 1 Peter 1:19 – “With the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish…”
  • Romans 5:8 – “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
  • Revelation 5:9 – “Thou hast redeemed us by Thy blood…”

🧭 Final Reflection: Behold and Believe

John’s message was not clever. It was clear. He didn’t tell people to behave—he told them to behold.

“Behold the Lamb” means:

  • ⛓️ You don’t carry your sin—He does.
  • 🩸 You don’t earn forgiveness—He paid for it.
  • 🌍 You’re not excluded—He died for the world.

This one-line sermon is the center of all Scripture and the summary of salvation. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, or what you’ve done—if you’ll behold the Lamb, you’ll find life.

Fix your eyes on Jesus today. Tell someone else to do the same.

📣 Because the world doesn’t need a better religion—it needs a clearer view of the Lamb.
