John 1:29
It may be the most powerful one-line sermon ever preached. In one Spirit-filled sentence, John the Baptist introduces Jesusânot merely as a rabbi, prophet, or miracle worker, but as the sacrifice that will change eternity:
âBehold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.â (John 1:29)
This is more than a poetic phrase. It is a revelation of Jesusâ identity, His mission, and His method. In just a few words, John preaches the entire gospel.
1ď¸âŁ Behold â A Call to Attention and Adoration
âBeholdâ is not a casual suggestionâitâs a command to stop and stare in awe. John is saying, âFix your eyes on Him. Donât miss this.â
It echoes the prophetic language of Scripture:
- Isaiah 7:14 â âBehold, a virgin shall conceiveâŚâ
- Zechariah 9:9 â âBehold, your king comes to youâŚâ
- Isaiah 42:1 â âBehold my servant, whom I upholdâŚâ
To behold Jesus is to recognize Him for who He truly isânot merely a man, but the divine Lamb sent by the Father.
2ď¸âŁ The Lamb of God â The Fulfillment of Every Sacrifice
John the Baptist, the son of a priest, knew the sacrificial system intimately. He had seen lambs offered daily on the altar for sin. Now he sees the true Lambânot brought by man to God, but sent by God to man
From Genesis to Revelation, the Lamb theme unfolds:
- đ Genesis 22: Abraham says, âGod will provide Himself a lamb.â
- 𩸠Exodus 12: The Passover lambâs blood protects from death.
- đ Isaiah 53: âHe is brought as a lamb to the slaughterâŚâ
- đ Revelation 5: âWorthy is the Lamb who was slainâŚâ
Jesus is not a lamb. He is the LambâGodâs Lamb.
đ Word Study
áźÎźÎ˝á˝¸Ď Ďοῌ θξοῌ (amnos tou Theou) â âThe Lamb of Godâ
Unique in Scripture, this title defines Jesusâ core purpose: to be the perfect, pure, permanent sacrifice for sin.
3ď¸âŁ Takes Away â The Power of His Atonement
John doesnât say Jesus will cover sin temporarilyâhe says He will take it away. The Greek word here, airĹ, means to lift, remove, carry off, take away entirely.
This is what the blood of bulls and goats could never do (Hebrews 10:4). But the Lamb of God would do once and for all:
- Hebrews 9:26 â âHe appeared once for all⌠to put away sin.â
- 1 John 3:5 â âHe was manifested to take away our sinsâŚâ
- Psalm 103:12 â âAs far as the east is from the westâŚâ
The cross didnât just shift your sinâit erased it.
4ď¸âŁ The Sin of the World â A Universal Gospel
This one phrase shattered centuries of ethnic exclusivity. The Messiah wasnât just for Israel. He came for the whole worldâJew and Gentile, rich and poor, moral and immoral.
John doesn’t say “sins” (plural), but “sin” (singular)âthe root, the curse, the great cancer of humanity.
- 1 John 2:2 â âHe is the propitiation⌠for the sins of the whole world.â
- Isaiah 53:6 â âThe Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all.â
- Revelation 7:9 â A multitude from every nation worships the Lamb.
No one is outside His reach. The Lamb was slain for all who will believe.
đ Scriptures That Confirm This Gospel Truth
- Isaiah 53:5â6 â âHe was wounded for our transgressionsâŚâ
- Hebrews 10:10 â âSanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.â
- 1 Peter 1:19 â âWith the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemishâŚâ
- Romans 5:8 â âWhile we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.â
- Revelation 5:9 â âThou hast redeemed us by Thy bloodâŚâ
đ§ Final Reflection: Behold and Believe
Johnâs message was not clever. It was clear. He didnât tell people to behaveâhe told them to behold.
âBehold the Lambâ means:
- âď¸ You donât carry your sinâHe does.
- 𩸠You donât earn forgivenessâHe paid for it.
- đ Youâre not excludedâHe died for the world.
This one-line sermon is the center of all Scripture and the summary of salvation. It doesnât matter who you are, where youâre from, or what youâve doneâif youâll behold the Lamb, youâll find life.
Fix your eyes on Jesus today. Tell someone else to do the same.
đŁ Because the world doesnât need a better religionâit needs a clearer view of the Lamb.
