1 Samuel 9:1–27
Saul didn’t set out to become king. He set out to find some lost donkeys. But God had bigger plans. In one of the most providential chapters in Scripture, we see how God orchestrates ordinary events to fulfill extraordinary purposes.
When Saul couldn’t find what he was looking for, he discovered something greater: his divine assignment.
1️⃣ A Man of Impressive Appearance
“There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.” (1 Samuel 9:2)
Saul looked the part. Tall. Strong. Impressive. But while man looks at the outward appearance, God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). 👤
🎯 Insight
Saul had the look of a king—but in time, his heart would tell a different story. Appearance may open doors, but only character keeps them open.
2️⃣ Looking for Donkeys, Found a Prophet
Saul and his servant wander in search of lost donkeys but find themselves near Ramah, where the prophet Samuel lives. God had told Samuel the day before:
“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man… and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel.” (1 Samuel 9:16)
This wasn’t a coincidence—it was divine appointment. ✨
3️⃣ Providence in the Details
Notice how God’s hand is in everything:
- 📍 The location of the donkeys
- 👣 The direction Saul takes
- 💡 The servant’s idea to find the prophet
- 📖 Samuel’s revelation the day before
God is not random. He orders our steps—even through detours and dead ends. (Proverbs 16:9)
4️⃣ The First Shall Be Last
“And to whom is all the desire of Israel turned, if not to you and your whole family line?” Saul answered, “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe…” (1 Samuel 9:20–21)
Saul is shocked. He doesn’t feel worthy. But God often calls the least likely. Benjamin was the smallest tribe. Saul saw himself as unimportant—but God had chosen him. 🙇♂️
Just like Moses said, “Who am I?” (Exodus 3:11) or Gideon said, “My clan is the weakest…” (Judges 6:15), God loves to raise up the lowly.
🪨 Kingdom Pattern
God chooses the foolish things to shame the wise, and the weak things to shame the strong. (1 Corinthians 1:27)
5️⃣ A Meal Fit for a King
Samuel sets Saul at the head of the table, gives him the best portion, and honors him before thirty guests. 🥩
Saul still doesn’t fully understand what’s happening, but God is setting the stage. Often, God prepares us in private before He reveals us in public.
6️⃣ A Quiet Moment, A Royal Future
The chapter ends with this simple but profound moment:
“As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, ‘Tell the servant to pass on before us… but you stand still awhile, that I may make known to you the word of God.’” (1 Samuel 9:27)
Before Saul receives a crown, he receives a Word. 🕊️
🧭 Life Application
- 🐾 Is God using detours in your life to lead you to something deeper?
- 🎯 Are you seeking His voice—or just looking for what you’ve lost?
- 🙇♂️ Are you underestimating what God wants to do through you?
📌 Takeaway Truth
Destiny doesn’t always begin in palaces—it often starts with donkeys. What looks like a mundane search may actually be the road to your calling.
