āSo if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.ā ā Matthew 5:23ā24
Jesus turns our ideas about worship upside down. He says that broken relationships can break our communion with God. Before you sing, serve, or sacrificeāgo and make peace. God cares more about our unity than our ritual. Reconciliation is worship.
To āleave your giftā means interrupting your religious routine for the sake of healing. And āfirst be reconciledā means you donāt wait for the other person to make the first move. Forgiveness and humility are not optionalātheyāre kingdom priorities.
š Word Study
Reconciled (Greek: diallassÅ, ΓιαλλάĻĻĻ) ā to restore to friendship, to make peace, to remove enmity between two parties.
This form of the word implies mutual resolutionābut Jesus calls you to initiate it. Even if the offense wasnāt your fault, the first step of peace is yours to take.
š A Diamond of Truth
We cannot love God and harbor hate. We cannot draw near to the altar and avoid the hard conversation. Reconciliation reveals the heart of GodāHe pursued peace with us. And now He commands us to pursue it with others.
Peace with people clears the path to deeper praise.
š¬ Reflect and Respond
- Is there someone you need to reach out to today in humility and grace?
- Have you been prioritizing rituals over relationships?
- How can you reflect Godās mercy in the way you pursue peace?
Lay down your pride. Leave the altar.
And go be reconciledābecause thatās the kind of worship God desires.
