“But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” – Matthew 5:39
This may be one of Jesus’ most misunderstood and misapplied commands. It doesn’t mean we allow abuse or injustice to flourish unchecked. It means that in personal offense, retaliation is not the way of the cross. Grace is.
In the ancient world, a slap on the right cheek was a backhanded insult—more humiliation than harm. Jesus isn’t just addressing violence—He’s confronting our pride. He’s saying, “You don’t have to defend your ego. You don’t have to trade insult for insult. You are free to absorb the blow… and respond with the heart of heaven.”
📜 Word Study
Do not resist (Greek: antistēnai, ἀντιστῆναι) – to oppose, to retaliate, to stand against with hostility or force.
This word is used elsewhere for military resistance—but here, Jesus applies it to personal offense. It’s not a call to passivity, but to radical mercy.
💎 A Diamond of Truth
The kingdom of God doesn’t advance by fists—it moves forward through forgiveness. Jesus practiced what He preached. When reviled, He didn’t revile back. When mocked, He didn’t retaliate. When nailed, He forgave.
Our instinct is revenge. His invitation is redemption.
💬 Reflect and Respond
- Where are you tempted to retaliate instead of release?
- Is there an insult or injury you’ve been holding onto?
- What would it look like for you to respond with grace this week?
Lay down the sword. Absorb the insult.
And let mercy speak louder than revenge.
