“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” – Matthew 6:25 (ESV)
📜 The Command
Jesus issues a direct prohibition against worry—not a suggestion, but a command. This is rooted in the reality that God is sovereign, faithful, and able to provide all our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).
🕊 Theological Depth
- Worry is misplaced trust – Anxiety reveals a heart leaning on self-sufficiency rather than God’s sufficiency (Psalm 55:22; 1 Peter 5:7).
- Worry is a faith issue – Jesus calls His disciples “O you of little faith” (Matthew 6:30) because anxiety forgets His past faithfulness and doubts His present care.
- Worry chokes the Word – In the parable of the sower, the cares of this world are like thorns that choke spiritual fruitfulness (Matthew 13:22).
🗝 Word Study
- Anxious – Greek: merimnáō (μεριμνάω, meh-rim-NAH-oh) – to be divided, distracted, or pulled in different directions. Worry splits the mind between God’s promises and our fears.
🌿 Biblical Illustrations
- Israel in the wilderness – worrying about food and water despite daily manna and water from the rock (Exodus 16, Numbers 20).
- Elijah and the widow – God providing supernaturally in famine (1 Kings 17:8–16).
- Paul in prison – contentment and peace despite circumstances (Philippians 4:6–7, 11–13).
💎 Diamond of Truth
Worry is the enemy of worship. You cannot magnify the problem and magnify God at the same time. Peace is found not in the absence of trouble but in the presence of the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 26:3).
💬 Reflect and Respond
- What is my heart clinging to that competes with my trust in God’s provision?
- Am I rehearsing God’s promises more than my problems?
- Will I choose prayer over panic today?
