“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” – Matthew 7:13–14
🧭 Context
This command comes near the conclusion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. He has just summarized the Law and the Prophets with the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12) and now confronts His hearers with a choice: two gates, two roads, two destinations. There is no middle ground.
📜 Word Study
- Enter – Greek: eiselthate (εἰσέλθατε, pronounced ee-SEL-tha-teh), an aorist imperative meaning “enter decisively, once for all.” This is not casual window-shopping—it’s a command to make a clear commitment.
- Narrow – Greek: stenēs (στενῆς, pronounced STEN-ace), meaning “confined, compressed, restricted.” It speaks of difficulty and discipline.
- Way – Greek: hodos (ὁδός, pronounced HO-dos), a path or road, figuratively a way of life.
- Life – Greek: zōē (ζωή, pronounced zo-AY), life in its highest sense—eternal life with God.
🔍 The Two Gates Compared
| Wide Gate | Narrow Gate |
|---|---|
| Many enter | Few find it |
| Easy, broad, self-indulgent path | Hard, disciplined, Christ-focused path |
| Leads to destruction | Leads to life |
| Requires no repentance | Requires repentance and faith |
💡 Why the Narrow Gate?
The narrow gate is not narrow because God is stingy with salvation—it’s narrow because it is exclusive to Christ. Jesus will later say, “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved” (John 10:9) and “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
⚠️ Misconceptions
- It’s not about self-denial for its own sake – The narrow way is purposeful, not arbitrary hardship.
- It’s not earned by effort – Though it is hard, salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9).
- It’s not popular – Expect opposition, even from the majority.
🪞 Application
Jesus’ command is urgent: choose your gate now. The wide gate can look inviting—freedom without accountability, spirituality without repentance, religion without Christ. But the end is destruction. The narrow gate is Christ Himself, and it leads to eternal joy, though the journey is marked by obedience, holiness, and perseverance.
🛐 Prayer
Lord Jesus, I hear Your call to enter by the narrow gate. Guard me from the deception of the wide road. Strengthen me to follow You even when the way is hard, trusting that the end of this road is life forever with You. Amen.
💬 Reflect and Respond
- Have I truly entered through the narrow gate, or am I merely walking near it?
- What temptations pull me toward the wide road?
- How can I help others find and enter through the narrow gate?
