💎 Daily Diamonds – Commands of Christ: Judge Not

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.” – Matthew 7:1–2 (ESV)

📜 The Command

Jesus calls His disciples to examine themselves before examining others. This is not a prohibition against discernment—Scripture elsewhere commands us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1) and to judge righteous judgment (John 7:24). Rather, Jesus warns against a critical, hypocritical spirit that elevates self while condemning others.

🕊 Theological Depth

  • God Alone is the Final Judge – Paul reminds us, “We will all stand before the judgment seat of God” (Romans 14:10–12). To usurp that role is to place ourselves in God’s position.
  • Hypocrisy is the Real Target – Jesus illustrates this with the absurd picture of a man trying to remove a speck from his brother’s eye while a beam juts from his own (Matthew 7:3–5).
  • Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment – James 2:13 reminds us that when we extend mercy, we reflect God’s heart, for He has shown us mercy in Christ.

🗝 Word Study

  • Judge – Greek: krínō (κρίνω, KREE-noh) – to separate, decide, or condemn. The word can mean righteous discernment or harsh condemnation depending on context.

🌿 Biblical Illustrations

  • The Pharisee and the tax collector – The Pharisee exalted himself by condemning others, but the humble tax collector went home justified (Luke 18:9–14).
  • David and Nathan – David condemned a parable character’s sin before realizing it was his own. Self-righteous judgment blinded him until confronted (2 Samuel 12:1–7).

💎 Diamond of Truth

When we sit in the Judge’s chair, we forget we belong in the defendant’s seat. Only Christ, the Righteous Judge, has the authority to condemn—and in Him there is now no condemnation (Romans 8:1).

💬 Reflect and Respond

  • Am I quick to criticize others while excusing my own sin?
  • Do my judgments flow from love and truth or from pride and comparison?
  • How can I reflect God’s mercy today instead of rushing to condemn?
