“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” – Matthew 22:39 (ESV)
📜 The Command
Second only to loving God, Jesus commands us to love people. Our neighbor includes not only friends but also strangers and enemies.
🕊 Theological Depth
- The Royal Law – James calls this the “royal law” (James 2:8), because it sums up human relationships under God’s rule.
- Rooted in God’s Love – We cannot love others rightly until we are filled with His love (1 John 4:7–11).
🗝 Word Study
- Neighbor – Greek: plēsion (πλησίον, play-SEE-on) – anyone near, not limited by ethnicity or boundary.
💎 Diamond of Truth
Loving neighbor is the visible proof of loving God. To love as Christ loved is the mark of true discipleship (John 13:34–35).
💬 Reflect and Respond
- Do I limit who qualifies as my “neighbor”?
- How can I show Christ’s love in tangible ways this week?
