âBlessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven…â â Matthew 5:11â12
This command from Jesus flips the worldâs logic upside down. Rejoice when you suffer? Celebrate when you’re mocked? In the kingdom of God, persecution isnât a setbackâitâs a sign. When the world pushes back against you for His nameâs sake, youâre not being abandonedâyouâre being honored.
Jesus never promised popularityâHe promised a cross. But He also promised joy. Deep, unshakable, heaven-rooted joy. Not because we enjoy the pain, but because we know what it means: we are identified with Him, we are storing up eternal reward, and we are walking a well-worn path of faithful saints.
đ Word Study
Rejoice (Greek: chairo, ÏαίÏÏ) â to be full of joy, to thrive in gladness, to delight with spiritual happiness.
Be glad (Greek: agalliaĆ, áŒÎłÎ±Î»Î»ÎčÎŹÏ) â to jump for joy, to exult, to be exceedingly joyful outwardly.
Both verbs are active and intentional. Jesus commands joyânot as emotion but as obedience. He tells us not only to endure hardship but to exult in it.
đ A Diamond of Truth
Persecution strips away shallow faith and leaves behind only the real. Jesus doesnât call us to fake happinessâbut to live with eternal perspective. Our joy in suffering testifies to a watching world that Christ is worth it.
And when we rejoice in the fire, we reflect the light of heaven.
đŹ Reflect and Respond
- Have you ever faced ridicule or loss for following Jesus?
- How can you shift your mindset from fear to rejoicing?
- What reward are you living forâearthly applause or eternal glory?
Today, donât shrink back. Rejoice. Be glad.
For great is your rewardâand even greater is your King.
