āThe time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.ā ā Mark 1:15
These were the first recorded words of Jesus in Markās Gospel. Not a suggestion. Not a teaching. A command. The first step in following Jesus isnāt climbing a ladder of good worksāitās a complete change of heart. Repent. Turn around. Stop going your own way and turn toward the truth. Then believeātrust fully in the good news that Jesus is enough.
This is the heartbeat of the gospel. You canāt skip it. You canāt soften it. The call to repent and believe is not just a message for sinners āout there.ā Itās a daily call to every disciple.
š Word Study
Repent (Greek: metanoeÅ, μεĻανοĪĻ) ā to change oneās mind, to turn back, to experience deep remorse and direction shift.
Believe (Greek: pisteuÅ, ĻιĻĻεĻĻ) ā to place full trust in, to rely upon, to entrust oneself entirely to another.
Jesus calls us to turn from sin and selfāand turn toward Him in full surrender and faith.
š A Diamond of Truth
Repentance without belief leads to despair. Belief without repentance leads to delusion. But together, they open the door to life eternal. This is not a one-time emotional momentāit is a new way of walking. A turning from all false hopes and a turning toward the true Savior.
When Jesus says, āRepent and believe,ā Heās not asking you to improveāHeās calling you to be transformed.
š¬ Reflect and Respond
- Have you truly repentedānot just of sins, but of self-rule?
- Is your belief rooted in trust or tradition?
- What does daily repentance and ongoing belief look like in your life?
Today, hear again His first command.
Repent. Believe. Be made new.
