💔 Set Apart — Born This Way? Understanding Identity, Desire, and the Fall

Key Scripture: Psalm 51:5 (ESV)
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

🌍 A Culture Confused by Desire

Perhaps no statement is more common in the conversation around same-sex attraction than this:

“I didn’t choose this. I was born this way.”

It’s a heartfelt claim—and an understandable one. Many people who experience same-sex attraction say those feelings have been with them since childhood. These desires feel natural, involuntary, and deeply embedded in their personality.

But here’s the important question for believers:

Do our natural desires define our identity—or does God?

🩻 The Bible’s Answer: You May Have Been Born This Way… But That’s Why You Must Be Born Again

Psalm 51:5 gives us a sobering reminder of the human condition:

“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

This is the doctrine of original sin: we are born not just with the capacity to sin, but with a nature that is inclined toward it.

Romans 5:12: “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.”

That means our natural desires—even deeply felt ones—may be contrary to God’s design. Whether we’re drawn toward pride, lust, anger, envy, or same-sex temptation, the gospel message remains the same:

We don’t need to be affirmed in how we were born. We need to be reborn.

John 3:3: “Jesus answered him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.’”

⚠️ Being Born with a Desire Doesn’t Make It Right

Some argue: “If God made me this way, how can it be wrong?”

But Scripture is clear: God created us good (Genesis 1:27), but sin corrupted us. Not everything we feel is holy. Not everything natural is righteous.

Jeremiah 17:9: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Imagine telling a man born with a temper, “It’s okay to hit people—you were born angry.” Or someone with a tendency toward addiction, “God must want you to drink—you crave it.”

We know this is flawed logic in other areas. Why would we accept it when it comes to sexuality?

🧬 What If Same-Sex Attraction Is Genetic?

Science is still inconclusive about whether there is a “gay gene.” But let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that it’s proven to exist.

Would that change the Bible’s position?

No. Scripture doesn’t base morality on genetics. In fact, it assumes we are all born with corrupted desires—and that we must be transformed by God’s Spirit.

Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”

🏷️ Identity Crisis: You Are Not Your Temptation

One of the greatest lies of our culture is that your desires are your identity. But Jesus never taught that. In fact, He said we must deny ourselves—not celebrate ourselves.

Luke 9:23: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

This is not a message of shame—it’s a message of hope. You are not locked into a label. You are not defined by what tempts you. You are invited into a new identity in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

💡 Temptation vs. Sin

It’s important to distinguish between same-sex attraction and homosexual behavior.

  • Temptation is not sin. Jesus was tempted (Hebrews 4:15), yet remained sinless.
  • Acting on temptation—physically or mentally—is sin.

Matthew 5:28: “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

That includes same-sex lust. But here’s the good news: temptation can be resisted through the power of the Holy Spirit.

🛠️ Five Steps to Walk in Truth and Transformation

1. Be Honest with God

Bring your desires into the light. God isn’t shocked.

1 John 1:7: “If we walk in the light… the blood of Jesus… cleanses us from all sin.”

2. Refuse False Labels

You are not your temptation. Don’t wear a name tag God didn’t write.

1 Corinthians 6:19–20: “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.”

3. Renew Your Mind

Let God’s truth shape your identity.

Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

4. Stay in Community

Healing happens in the body of Christ—not in isolation.

Galatians 6:2: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

5. Trust That Jesus Is Better

The joy of following Christ outweighs the cost.

Psalm 16:11: “In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

💬 Final Word: From Birth to Rebirth

If you’ve said, “I was born this way,” know this:

Yes—you were. And that’s exactly why Jesus came.

He didn’t come to affirm you. He came to rescue you. He came to make you new.

Your identity is not “gay” or “straight.”
Your identity is not “broken” or “beyond hope.”

Your identity is: Beloved Child of God. Redeemed. Reborn. Set Apart.
