Key Scripture: Psalm 51:5 (ESV)
âBehold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.â
đ A Culture Confused by Desire
Perhaps no statement is more common in the conversation around same-sex attraction than this:
âI didnât choose this. I was born this way.â
Itâs a heartfelt claimâand an understandable one. Many people who experience same-sex attraction say those feelings have been with them since childhood. These desires feel natural, involuntary, and deeply embedded in their personality.
But hereâs the important question for believers:
Do our natural desires define our identityâor does God?
𩻠The Bibleâs Answer: You May Have Been Born This Way⌠But Thatâs Why You Must Be Born Again
Psalm 51:5 gives us a sobering reminder of the human condition:
âBehold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.â
This is the doctrine of original sin: we are born not just with the capacity to sin, but with a nature that is inclined toward it.
Romans 5:12: âTherefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.â
That means our natural desiresâeven deeply felt onesâmay be contrary to Godâs design. Whether weâre drawn toward pride, lust, anger, envy, or same-sex temptation, the gospel message remains the same:
We donât need to be affirmed in how we were born. We need to be reborn.
John 3:3: âJesus answered him, âTruly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.ââ
â ď¸ Being Born with a Desire Doesnât Make It Right
Some argue: âIf God made me this way, how can it be wrong?â
But Scripture is clear: God created us good (Genesis 1:27), but sin corrupted us. Not everything we feel is holy. Not everything natural is righteous.
Jeremiah 17:9: âThe heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?â
Imagine telling a man born with a temper, âItâs okay to hit peopleâyou were born angry.â Or someone with a tendency toward addiction, âGod must want you to drinkâyou crave it.â
We know this is flawed logic in other areas. Why would we accept it when it comes to sexuality?
𧏠What If Same-Sex Attraction Is Genetic?
Science is still inconclusive about whether there is a âgay gene.â But letâs assume, for the sake of argument, that itâs proven to exist.
Would that change the Bibleâs position?
No. Scripture doesnât base morality on genetics. In fact, it assumes we are all born with corrupted desiresâand that we must be transformed by Godâs Spirit.
Romans 12:2: âDo not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mindâŚâ
đˇď¸ Identity Crisis: You Are Not Your Temptation
One of the greatest lies of our culture is that your desires are your identity. But Jesus never taught that. In fact, He said we must deny ourselvesânot celebrate ourselves.
Luke 9:23: âIf anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.â
This is not a message of shameâitâs a message of hope. You are not locked into a label. You are not defined by what tempts you. You are invited into a new identity in Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17: âTherefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.â
đĄ Temptation vs. Sin
Itâs important to distinguish between same-sex attraction and homosexual behavior.
- Temptation is not sin. Jesus was tempted (Hebrews 4:15), yet remained sinless.
- Acting on temptationâphysically or mentallyâis sin.
Matthew 5:28: âBut I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.â
That includes same-sex lust. But hereâs the good news: temptation can be resisted through the power of the Holy Spirit.
đ ď¸ Five Steps to Walk in Truth and Transformation
1. Be Honest with God
Bring your desires into the light. God isnât shocked.
1 John 1:7: âIf we walk in the light⌠the blood of Jesus⌠cleanses us from all sin.â
2. Refuse False Labels
You are not your temptation. Donât wear a name tag God didnât write.
1 Corinthians 6:19â20: âYou are not your own, for you were bought with a price.â
3. Renew Your Mind
Let Godâs truth shape your identity.
Psalm 119:105: âYour word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.â
4. Stay in Community
Healing happens in the body of Christânot in isolation.
Galatians 6:2: âBear one anotherâs burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.â
5. Trust That Jesus Is Better
The joy of following Christ outweighs the cost.
Psalm 16:11: âIn your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.â
đŹ Final Word: From Birth to Rebirth
If youâve said, âI was born this way,â know this:
Yesâyou were. And thatâs exactly why Jesus came.
He didnât come to affirm you. He came to rescue you. He came to make you new.
Your identity is not âgayâ or âstraight.â
Your identity is not âbrokenâ or âbeyond hope.â
Your identity is: Beloved Child of God. Redeemed. Reborn. Set Apart.
