1 Samuel 11:1ā15
Saul had been chosen and anointed. But until now, he hadnāt acted. That changes in this chapter. When Nahash the Ammonite threatens Jabesh-gilead, something stirs within Saulāsomething holy and fierce. The Spirit of God comes upon him, and courage is awakened.
This is the Saul Israel hoped for: bold, decisive, Spirit-led. And in this moment of crisis, he becomes the leader God appointed him to be. āļøš„
1ļøā£ The Cruelty of the Enemy
āMake a treaty with us and we will serve you,ā they said. But Nahash the Ammonite said, āOnly on this condition⦠that I gouge out all your right eyes and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.āā (1 Samuel 11:1ā2)
Nahash doesnāt just want submissionāhe wants humiliation. He wants to blind Israel and shame them. š
This is how the enemy still works: he aims to disfigure, disable, and disgrace.Ā But God had raised up a delivererā¦
ā ļø Spiritual Warning
The enemy doesnāt negotiate fairlyāhe aims to destroy. Never make peace with what God has called you to conquer.
2ļøā£ The Spirit of God Rushed Upon Saul
āAnd the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled.ā (1 Samuel 11:6)
This is righteous angerāholy boldness. Itās not personal revenge. Itās Spirit-driven zeal to defend God’s people. š„
Compare this with Jesus in John 2, who fashioned a whip and cleared the temple. Thereās a time for fierce obedience. Meekness is not weakness.
3ļøā£ One Nation, One Voice
Saul cuts up oxen and sends pieces throughout Israelāan urgent call to arms. And the result?
āAnd the dread of the LORD fell upon the people, and they came out as one man.ā (1 Samuel 11:7)
Unity cameānot through Saulās charisma, but through the fear of the Lord. This is spiritual leadership in action. š
4ļøā£ Deliverance at Dawn
Saul leads a surprise attack early the next morning. The Ammonites are routed. Israel is delivered. And the people rejoice.
God used Saul to bring victoryāand to remind Israel that He still defends His people when they walk in His will. š”ļø
This victory mirrors what the Holy Spirit does in our lives: breaks fear, unites the people, and brings triumph over oppression.
5ļøā£ No Retaliation, Only Renewal
Some had doubted Saulās kingship. Now they want those dissenters punished. But Saul shows restraint:
āNot a man shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.ā (1 Samuel 11:13)
Great leaders give grace when they could demand revenge.
šļø Leadership Lesson
Saul started wellāSpirit-filled, courageous, gracious. This is a model worth imitating⦠and a reminder that a good beginning must be followed by faithful steps.

- š„ Are you allowing the Spirit of God to stir you to boldness and action?
- š”ļø Are you defending what God has entrusted to youāor settling for compromise?
- 𤲠Are you offering grace where others expect judgment?
š Takeaway Truth
