Mark 4:39
It had been a long day of ministry. As evening came, Jesus told His disciples, āLet us pass over to the other side.ā (Mark 4:35). But no sooner had they obeyed than a violent storm arose. Waves crashed over the boat. Wind howled. Water filled the vessel. And fear filled their hearts.
But Jesus was asleep.
Panicked, they shook Him awake and cried, āMaster, carest thou not that we perish?ā
Then He stood, faced the stormāand spoke three simple words that silenced creation:
āPeace, be still.ā (Mark 4:39)
1ļøā£ The Chaos of the Storm
The Sea of Galilee is notorious for sudden, violent storms. But this one was more than meteorologicalāit was spiritual. The enemy was trying to drown the mission. The disciples were convinced they were dying. And Jesus⦠was resting.
Why was He sleeping? Because He wasnāt afraid. He had said, āLet us go to the other side.ā If He said it, they wouldnāt sinkātheyād arrive.
š§ Insight:
The presence of a storm doesnāt mean the absence of Godās plan. Obedience doesnāt exempt us from stormsāit carries us through them.
2ļøā£ The Authority of His Voice
āAnd He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still.ā
The Greek phrase literally means: āBe silent. Be muzzled.ā
Jesus didnāt wrestle with the storm. He spoke to it. Creation obeyed its Creator.
- š Wind and waves recognize His authority.
- š£ļø His voice can do what hours of effort cannot.
- šļø When Jesus speaks, storms surrender.
Psalm 89:9 ā āThou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.ā
3ļøā£ The Calm That Follows
āAnd the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.ā (Mark 4:39)
The word āgreatā is the same word used for āgreat stormā in verse 37. In other words, the great storm became a great calmānot gradually, but instantly.
Jesus doesnāt just lessen the stormāHe transforms it.
Philippians 4:7 ā āThe peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.ā
š Scriptures That Echo His Peace
- John 14:27 ā āPeace I leave with you⦠not as the world gives.ā
- Isaiah 26:3 ā āThou wilt keep him in perfect peaceā¦ā
- Colossians 3:15 ā āLet the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.ā
- Psalm 46:10 ā āBe still, and know that I am God.ā
4ļøā£ The Lesson for Every Disciple
After calming the storm, Jesus turned and asked:
āWhy are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?ā
The storm tested their trust. Their fear revealed what they believed about Jesus.
But the storm also revealed His power. And that day, they learned: Even the wind and waves obey Him.
š§ Final Reflection: Let Him Speak Peace
Jesus still speaks these words over trembling hearts: āPeace, be still.ā
- To the anxiousāHe speaks peace.
- To the grievingāHe speaks peace.
- To the guilty, the fearful, the overwhelmedāHe speaks peace.
Donāt fear the storm. Hear His voice.
He is in your boat. And He still speaks peace over every sea.
Peace, be still.
