Am I Safe

How Can I Be a Safe Person

  • Proverbs 18:10 (ESV) – “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”

Introduction

In a world filled with fear, broken trust, and emotional walls, people are desperately searching for a place—or a person—who feels safe.

But safety isn’t just found in a place. Sometimes, it’s found in a person. And if you are a follower of Jesus, you’re called to be that kind of person. Not perfect. But present. Not soft on truth. But strong in grace. A safe place—just like Jesus.

This message explores how we can reflect the heart of Christ and become a refuge for others.

I. Be a Safe Place by Reflecting God’s Character

Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

You can’t be a refuge unless you’ve found refuge in Him. The safest people are those who know what it feels like to be rescued by God.

Personal Reflection:
Do people feel peace in your presence because you carry the peace of Christ?

II. Be a Safe Place Through Listening, Not Fixing

James 1:19 – “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”

Most people need your ears before they need your advice.

He listened before He taught. He engaged with compassion before calling people to change.

Ask Yourself:
Am I someone who listens well, or someone who lectures fast?

III. Be a Safe Place Through Consistent Love

1 Corinthians 13:7 – “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

Love builds safety over time. Jesus didn’t walk away when people failed.

Challenge:
Do you stick around when it’s hard? Or do people have to earn back your love?

IV. Be a Safe Place by Speaking the Truth in Love

Ephesians 4:15 – “Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”

Safety isn’t about avoiding truth—it’s about how you deliver it.

The woman at the well heard truth wrapped in mercy. He didn’t ignore her past, but He didn’t condemn her either.

Balance:
Truth without love injures. Love without truth deceives. But truth with love? That transforms.

V. Be a Safe Place by Covering Others, Not Exposing Them

Proverbs 17:9 – “Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.”

Safe people guard stories. They don’t use someone’s weakness to feel strong.

He didn’t point fingers at the woman who wept at His feet. He forgave her and lifted her up.

Evaluate:
Can others trust you with their pain? Do you pray more than you repeat?

Conclusion: Jesus Is Our Model

Matthew 11:28–29 – “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest… for I am gentle and lowly in heart.”

Jesus was a safe place for the weary, the wounded, the weak, and even the wandering.

And He still is.

If we are to follow Him, we must reflect Him.

Life Application Questions

  • Who in your life needs a safe place right now?
  • Which group of people am I tempted to avoid, rather than embrace?
  • What does it look like for me to become a refuge for someone else?

Final Prayer

“Lord, make me a safe place.
Just as You welcomed me, help me welcome others.
Let my words carry healing, my presence bring peace,
and my heart reflect the refuge found in You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”
