🎶 A New Song

When deliverance comes, the melody changes. Let the redeemed of the Lord sing!

By Barry Coker

📖 Key Verse – Exodus 15:1 (KJV)

“Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.”

🌊 A Song of Victory After the Storm

The chains of slavery are broken. The Egyptian army lies buried beneath the sea. Israel stands trembling but free on the far side of the Red Sea. What do they do next?

They sing.

For the first time in Scripture, we hear a congregational worship song—not from a place of comfort, but from the ashes of trial and the miracle of survival. This wasn’t a performance; it was a praise explosion that burst from a people rescued by the mighty hand of God.

đź’ˇ Insight: The first recorded song in the Bible follows the first recorded miracle of national deliverance. Songs are the echo of salvation.

🗣️ Then Sang Moses

This passage marks a shift. Up until now, the Israelites had groaned under the weight of oppression. But after walking through walls of water and watching their enemies drown in the sea, they don’t groan—they sing.

This is not just Moses’ solo. It says, “Then sang Moses and the children of Israel.” Men, women, and children raised their voices together. Deliverance demands a declaration. Their song wasn’t rehearsed—it was revealed by God through joy.

🎵 Themes of the Song: Strength, Salvation, Sovereignty

“The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation…” (Exodus 15:2a)

  • Strength: The Lord empowered what they could not do.
  • Song: Worship flowed from victory.
  • Salvation: He brought them out when they had no way out.

This becomes a prototype of praise for every generation. This song carries the language of the gospel: redemption, judgment on the enemy, and celebration of God’s right hand of victory.

✝️ Typology: The Red Sea crossing is a picture of salvation—death behind, promise ahead. And like Israel, we too sing a new song when we cross from bondage into freedom through the blood of the Lamb.

🎤 Moses: Worship Leader and Word Writer

Did you know Moses was not only a lawgiver and prophet—but also a songwriter? The Psalms include at least one written by him—Psalm 90. Jewish tradition also credits him with Psalm 91, the psalm of divine protection.

His song in Exodus 15 is spontaneous yet theologically rich. It exalts the character of God, recounts His works, and anticipates His promises. This wasn’t fluff—it was doctrine on fire.

🎶 The Pattern Continues: Psalm 98:1

Psalm 98:1 (KJV): “O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.”

Generation after generation, the command is repeated: Sing to the Lord a new song! When God does something new, His people respond in worship. From Miriam to Mary, from Moses to the multitudes in Revelation, Heaven is filled with singing saints.

🕊️ Spirit-Filled Singing – Ephesians 5:18–21 (KJV)

[18] And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
[19] Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
[20] Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
[21] Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Singing is not just emotional expression—it’s a spiritual discipline. It’s the overflow of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

🎧 Application: You don’t need a perfect voice to sing—you need a thankful heart. Melody in the heart matters more than harmony in the ears.

🎚️ From Groaning to Glorifying

Israel groaned under Pharaoh. Now they glorify the Lord. What changed? God delivered them.

  • When God parts your Red Sea—sing.
  • When He throws the horse and rider into the sea—sing.
  • When He brings you out of bondage—sing!

You’ve got a new story—so sing a new song!

🎺 Looking Forward – The Song of Moses and the Lamb

Revelation 15:3 (KJV): “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb…”

Did you catch that? The song of Moses will be sung again in Heaven—this time joined with the song of the Lamb. The melody of Exodus 15 finds its fulfillment in Christ’s final victory!

🎼 Final Word: Keep Singing

You’ve been saved. You’ve been set free. The enemy has been drowned. God has done marvelous things. Don’t lose your song.

🔥 Challenge: What’s your “Red Sea” moment? Write it down. Sing it out. Let it be your anthem of praise to the God who still triumphs gloriously.

He’s still throwing horses and riders into the sea. He’s still turning groaning into singing. So lift your voice—it’s time for a new song. 🎶🙌
