1 Samuel 10:1–27
Saul has been chosen. He’s been set apart. He’s even been anointed with oil and filled with the Spirit. But when the time comes to step into his role publicly—he hides. This chapter reminds us that God often calls the hesitant, but He equips them with power, signs, and confirmation.
1️⃣ The Private Anointing
“Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, ‘Has not the LORD anointed you to be prince over his people Israel?’” (1 Samuel 10:1)
Samuel anoints Saul privately. This wasn’t yet a public coronation—it was an intimate act of divine calling.
The oil symbolized God’s choice, God’s covering, and God’s Spirit. Just as David would later be anointed, and Jesus Himself declared the Anointed One (Messiah), anointing always precedes appointing.
💡 Insight
God often calls people in quiet places before He uses them in public spaces.
2️⃣ Signs for a Reluctant Heart
To help assure Saul of this divine assignment, Samuel gives him three prophetic signs (vv. 2–7):
- He’ll meet two men near Rachel’s tomb with news of the donkeys 🐴
- He’ll meet three men bringing offerings—who give him bread 🍞
- He’ll meet a group of prophets—and join them, prophesying 🔥
Each sign is specific and supernatural. God didn’t just call Saul—He confirmed it.
God often gives us *just enough* confirmation to move forward in faith. (2 Corinthians 13:1)
3️⃣ The Spirit of God Rushed Upon Him
“Then the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them.” (1 Samuel 10:10)
This is a key moment. Saul is changed by the Spirit. His heart is turned. He even joins the prophets in ecstatic praise. ✨
This echoes what Jesus promised in Acts 1:8: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”
4️⃣ When the Calling Is Tested
Later, Samuel gathers the tribes to announce the chosen king. One by one, the families are narrowed down until Saul is selected… but he’s nowhere to be found. 😨
“He has hidden himself among the baggage.” (1 Samuel 10:22)
Even after signs, anointing, and the Spirit—Saul hides. Why? Because he feared stepping fully into what God called him to be.
⚠️ Application
Have you ever hidden from your calling? Sometimes we feel unworthy. But if God calls you, no amount of hiding will stop His plan. He will find you… and pull you forward.
5️⃣ Mixed Responses from the Crowd
Some people shout, “Long live the king!” 👏
Others despise him and say, “How can this man save us?” 😒
Calling will always divide opinions. But God had spoken—and that was enough. Samuel wrote everything down and laid it before the Lord.
🧭 Life Application
- 🛢️ Has God anointed you for something you’re afraid to step into?
- 👀 Are you waiting for more signs instead of walking in obedience?
- 🎒 Are you hiding among the baggage when you’ve already been chosen?
📌 Takeaway Truth
God’s calling comes with confirmation—but fear still has to be faced. The same Spirit that calls you will empower you. Don’t hide among the baggage when God is calling you forward.
