Convicted by the Spirit — Sin, Righteousness, and Judgment
John 16:8–11
In John 16:8–11 Jesus teaches that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment so that sinners will run to Christ, trust His finished work, and walk in the freedom of true repentance.
This is not condemnation.
It is mercy.
On the night before the cross, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would continue God’s work in the world—not by spectacle, not by pressure, and not by manipulation, but by conviction.
Conviction is not God pushing you away.
It is God shining light so you can come to Jesus.
The Promise of Conviction — When the Spirit Comes
John 16:8 (ESV)
“And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.”
The word convict is more than “make someone feel guilty.” It carries the idea of exposing, persuading, proving—bringing something into the light so it can no longer hide.
Condemnation drives you away from Christ.
Conviction draws you toward Christ.
Romans 8:1 (ESV) reminds believers: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Convicted of Sin — Because We Need a Savior
John 16:9 (ESV)
“Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me.”
Jesus names the root of sin: unbelief. The Spirit does not only expose bad behavior—He exposes the deeper problem: we have not trusted Christ as Lord and Savior.
And even for believers, the Spirit continues to convict—not to revoke sonship, but to restore fellowship.
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
When the Spirit convicts you of sin, do not defend it or delay.
Confess it quickly, bring it into the light, and run to Jesus.
Convicted of Righteousness — Because Jesus Is Enough
John 16:10 (ESV)
“Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer.”
Jesus went to the Father because His work was accepted. His return to the Father declares that the sacrifice was sufficient and the righteousness He provides is real.
The Spirit convicts us here too:
- to stop trusting self-righteousness
- to stop measuring spirituality by performance
- to rest in the righteousness of Christ
2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
The Spirit does not point you to your own goodness.
He points you to Christ’s finished work.
Convicted of Judgment — Because the Enemy Is Defeated
John 16:11 (ESV)
“Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”
This is the victory announcement. Satan is not merely “in trouble”—he is already judged. The cross sealed his defeat, and Christ’s resurrection declared it openly.
Colossians 2:14–15 (ESV)
“[He] canceled the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”
If fear drives you away from Christ, it is not the Spirit’s work in you.
The Spirit shows you the judgment of the enemy so you can live in freedom and courage.
From Conviction to Life — What the Spirit Is Really Doing
The Spirit convicts so that sinners will come to Christ and saints will grow into Christ.
- He exposes sin so we will repent
- He reveals righteousness so we will trust Jesus
- He announces judgment so we will stand firm in victory
Conviction is not the end of the story — Christ is.
The Spirit wounds only so that Jesus may heal.
The Spirit’s Invitation
Revelation 22:17 (ESV)
“The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”
The Spirit does not say, “Fix yourself.”
He says, “Come to Jesus.”
