Daily Diamonds – Names of God: El Elyon (God Most High)

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth.”Genesis 14:19

When Abram returned victorious from battle, he was met by a mysterious priest-king named Melchizedek, who blessed him in the name of El Elyon—“God Most High.” In that moment, a truth rang out across time: there is no one above our God.

El Elyon speaks of God’s absolute supremacy. He is higher than every king, every idol, every principality and power. He is exalted in position, power, and praise. When we call Him El Elyon, we’re not just saying that God is strong—we’re saying He is sovereign.

📜 Word Study

El means “God.” Elyon (עֶלְיוֹן) means “Most High,” from a root meaning “to ascend” or “go up.” It is used frequently in Hebrew poetry and prayer to emphasize God’s exalted status—high above the heavens, beyond human limitation, and unmatched in glory.

Psalm 91:1 calls us to dwell “in the shelter of the Most High” and rest “in the shadow of the Almighty.” That’s not just poetic comfort—it’s divine assurance. The higher He is, the safer we are under Him.

💎 A Diamond of Truth

We live in a world full of rival “gods”—money, power, fame, fear. But El Elyon reigns above them all. He is not one among many—He is over all. He is not intimidated by the threats of nations, nor limited by the failures of men. He is enthroned forever.

When we remember El Elyon, we put our problems back in perspective. They may be high—but He is higher. And He has already won the war.

💬 Reflect and Respond

  • What is currently trying to take the “highest place” in your thoughts or priorities?
  • Have you consciously placed El Elyon above it all in your heart?
  • How can resting in the Most High change the way you handle today’s challenges?

Worship El Elyon today—not just with your lips, but with your trust. He is above. He is over. He is able. And He is yours.
