“You are a God of seeing… Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” – Genesis 16:13
Sometimes the pain is so personal, the loneliness so deep, that it feels like no one could possibly understand. That’s how Hagar felt—used, mistreated, and abandoned in the wilderness. But in her lowest moment, God appeared, and she gave Him a name that echoes through time: El Roi, “The God who sees me.”
God did not overlook her. He did not dismiss her pain. He sought her out. And when He called her by name and promised hope for her future, Hagar responded with awe and worship. She discovered something that changed everything—not that God exists, but that God sees.
📜 Word Study
El is the generic Hebrew word for “God,” often paired with other descriptors. Roi (רֹאִי) means “seeing, watching, perceiving.” El Roi is not simply the all-seeing eye of heaven—He is the intimate observer of every tear, every sigh, every silent prayer.
This name reminds us that we are never out of God’s sight—not even in our wilderness moments.

You are not invisible. Not to God. He sees your circumstances, your pain, your confusion, your trying—and He sees your heart.
And what’s more: He not only sees you; He looks after you. He responds. He intervenes. He leads you back to places of promise and grace.
In Jesus, El Roi is seen most fully. He looked on the crowds with compassion (Matthew 9:36). He saw the outcasts, the sinners, the forgotten—and He moved toward them, not away.
