“I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.” – Genesis 17:1
When God spoke to Abram at ninety-nine years old, He didn’t start with a demand—He started with a name: El Shaddai, “God Almighty.” This name was both a comfort and a call. Comfort, because nothing is too hard for El Shaddai. Call, because the Almighty One deserves our total surrender.
At this moment, God reaffirmed His covenant with Abram and changed his name to Abraham, “father of a multitude.” But how could that be? His wife Sarah was barren. Time had passed. Hope was dim. And yet, El Shaddai spoke. And what He speaks, He fulfills.
📜 Word Study
El means “God,” and Shaddai (שַׁדַּי) is traditionally translated “Almighty.” It carries the idea of overpowering strength, sufficiency, and the ability to nourish, satisfy, and supply. Some scholars connect “Shaddai” to a root meaning “breast,” symbolizing provision and nurture. Others link it to a word meaning “mountain,” symbolizing immovable power.
Put simply: El Shaddai is the All-Sufficient One—powerful enough to do the impossible and tender enough to meet your deepest needs.
💎 A Diamond of Truth
We often limit God by our own limitations. We measure His ability by our capacity to understand. But El Shaddai breaks those boundaries. He is not just slightly stronger than us—He is omnipotent. He holds galaxies in His hand and still cares for the details of your life.
When your strength runs out, El Shaddai has more. When the door seems closed, El Shaddai can make a way. When the promise feels too big, remember who gave it.
💬 Reflect and Respond
- What in your life feels too big or too broken for you to handle?
- How can remembering the name El Shaddai help restore your faith?
- Are you walking “before Him,” trusting His power more than your own?
You serve El Shaddai—God Almighty. Not barely able. Not maybe able. Always able. Trust Him to do what only He can do.
