Daily Diamonds – Names of God: Jehovah Chereb (The Lord the Sword)

“Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, the shield of your help, and the sword of your triumph!”Deuteronomy 33:29

We often picture God as a shepherd, a healer, or a refuge—and rightly so. But there’s another side of His character: Jehovah Chereb, “The Lord the Sword.” He is not only our shelter—He is our strength in battle.

In Moses’ final blessing to the tribes of Israel, he called the Lord both a shield and a sword. One to protect. The other to conquer. This name assures us that God does not stand idly by when His people are attacked. He defends. He advances. He strikes with righteousness and power.

📜 Word Study

Chereb (חֶרֶב) is the Hebrew word for “sword.” In Scripture, it symbolizes warfare, justice, and divine judgment. When paired with Jehovah, it becomes a name of action: “The Lord fights for you.”

This imagery continues in the New Testament. God’s Word is called “the sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17), and Christ is depicted as returning with a sharp sword from His mouth to judge and make war (Revelation 19:15).

💎 A Diamond of Truth

Jehovah Chereb reminds us: you are not defenseless. God is not only your protector but also your champion. He is your sharp edge when truth must be spoken, your might when injustice must be confronted, and your defender when the enemy accuses.

He fights not with hatred, but with holiness. His sword wounds to heal, and it slays lies to reveal truth.

💬 Reflect and Respond

  • Where in your life do you feel like you’re in a spiritual battle?
  • Are you relying on your own words and strength, or on Jehovah Chereb’s truth?
  • How can you wield the Word of God more boldly this week?

Stand strong behind Jehovah Chereb. The battle is real—but so is your Warrior God. He fights for you. And He never loses.
