“For the Lord is a God of recompense; he will surely repay.” – Jeremiah 51:56

This name appears in the context of God’s judgment against Babylon. Though they had committed great violence, God promised through Jeremiah that He had seen every act—and would repay accordingly. He is not blind to injustice, nor indifferent to evil. He is a God of holy recompense.
📜 Word Study
Gemuwal (גְּמוּלָה) comes from the Hebrew root gamal, meaning “to deal fully with, to recompense, to repay.” When joined with El, it emphasizes that God alone has the right and the power to repay every deed with justice—perfectly and righteously.
Romans 12:19 echoes this truth in the New Testament: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Jehovah El Gemuwal is not vengeful in the human sense—He is holy, measured, and just. He repays evil with judgment, and faithfulness with reward.

God sees every injustice done against you—and every wrong you’ve done. And in His justice, He will repay. But here’s the miracle: for those who trust in Christ, the repayment for sin fell on Jesus at the cross.
He took our judgment so we could receive grace. Yet those who reject Him will still face the just repayment of Jehovah El Gemuwal. He is not mocked. What we sow, we will reap (Galatians 6:7).
