“And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord is my banner.” – Exodus 17:15
Sometimes life feels like a battle. Fatigue, fear, doubt, and discouragement rise like enemies in the valley. But in Exodus 17, we find a name of God that calls us to lift our eyes higher—Jehovah Nissi, “The Lord is my banner.”
As the Israelites fought against Amalek, Moses stood on the hill with the staff of God raised high. When his hands were lifted, Israel prevailed. When they fell, the enemy advanced. So Aaron and Hur stood beside him, holding up his hands until victory was won.
It was there—on that battleground—that Moses built an altar and declared, “Jehovah Nissi.” God Himself had been the rallying point, the standard, the banner under which His people triumphed.
📜 Word Study
Nissi (נִסִּי) comes from the Hebrew word nes, meaning “banner, standard, signal pole.” In ancient times, armies fought under banners that signified their identity and cause. To rally under a banner was to find courage, clarity, and belonging.
When we say, “The Lord is my banner,” we declare that we belong to Him—and that we fight our battles under His authority, for His glory, and with His strength.
💎 A Diamond of Truth
Jehovah Nissi reminds us: We don’t fight alone. In every spiritual battle, our victory is found not in our might, but in our surrender to the One who stands above us.
Your banner is not fear. Your banner is not failure. Your banner is not your past.
Your banner is the Lord of Hosts. When you feel weak in the valley, look up. He has never lost a battle—and He never will.
💬 Reflect and Respond
- What battle are you facing today?
- Are your hands weary? Who can help hold them up?
- Have you raised your eyes to see the Lord as your banner?
Lift your hands. Lift your heart. Lift your eyes. Jehovah Nissi goes before you. His banner over you is love, and His victory is secure.
