“Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord is Peace.” – Judges 6:24
Peace can be hard to find. Especially when the world around us is loud, the battles within us are fierce, and the future seems uncertain. But when God revealed Himself to Gideon, trembling in fear and hiding from enemies, He did not come with thunder or force. He came with a name—Jehovah Shalom, “The Lord is peace.”
Gideon thought he might die after encountering the angel of the Lord. But God calmed his heart, affirmed his calling, and made a covenant of presence. Gideon’s response was to worship. He built an altar and named it after what his soul had just found: not merely the absence of war, but the presence of God Himself.
📜 Word Study
Shalom (שָׁלוֹם) is a rich Hebrew word that goes far beyond the English idea of “peace.” It means wholeness, completeness, harmony, safety, well-being, and even prosperity. To live in shalom is to be aligned with God’s purpose and held together by His presence.
Jehovah Shalom is not just the peace-giver; He is peace embodied. When Jesus walked among us, Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled: “He shall be called… Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
💎 A Diamond of Truth
You don’t need perfect circumstances to have peace. You need a perfect God in the middle of your circumstances.
Peace is not something you earn or control—it’s something you receive. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you” (John 14:27). This is not the fragile calm of the world; it is the deep-rooted stillness of Jehovah Shalom.
💬 Reflect and Respond
- Where are you lacking peace today—your thoughts, relationships, health, or future?
- Have you invited Jehovah Shalom into that space?
- What altar of worship can you build today to mark His presence?
Let the Lord be your peace. Not just in the storm, but as your stillness within it. Not only after the battle, but as your calm in the fight. Jehovah Shalom is not far off—He is here, and He is enough.
