“And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The Lord is There.” – Ezekiel 48:35
Loneliness is a desert. It can creep in even when we’re surrounded by people. It whispers lies that no one sees, no one hears, and no one cares. But to this silence, God speaks a name that drives out despair: Jehovah Shammah, “The Lord is there.”
Spoken in the closing words of Ezekiel’s prophecy, this name points to a future reality—the restored Jerusalem where God’s presence would dwell forever. But it also speaks to our present reality. Wherever God is, there is hope. There is healing. There is home.
📜 Word Study
Shammah (שָׁמָּה) means “there, present.” It’s not a description of where we are—it’s a declaration of where God chooses to be. Jehovah Shammah promises that no matter the place or circumstance, God does not abandon His people. He is always there.
This name takes on its richest meaning in Jesus—Immanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). And in the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, God fulfills the promise of His continual presence (John 14:17).
💎 A Diamond of Truth
You may feel forgotten—but you are not forsaken. You may feel lost—but He knows exactly where you are. Jehovah Shammah is not watching from a distance. He is near. He is involved. He is here.
One day, in the New Jerusalem, His name will mark the city—and we will dwell with Him forever. But today, His name can mark your heart: “The Lord is there.” Even in the hospital room. Even in the prison cell. Even in the silence.
💬 Reflect and Respond
- Where do you feel most alone today?
- Have you spoken the name Jehovah Shammah into that space?
- How might your outlook change if you lived fully aware of His nearness?
Wherever you go, Jehovah Shammah is already there. He is not a visitor; He is a resident. And He will never move out.
