“And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.” – Colossians 1:18
The church is not a business, a brand, or a building. It is a living body—and Jesus Christ is the Head. He gives it life. He directs its steps. He holds it together.
Pastors may shepherd, elders may lead, members may serve—but only Christ governs. He is not a figurehead or symbolic leader. He is the risen, reigning Lord whose authority is supreme and whose presence is abiding. Every local church and every global gathering of believers is under His lordship.
📜 Word Study
Head of the Church (Greek: ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῦ σώματος, pronounced hay ke-fa-LAY too SO-ma-tos)
- Kefalē – “head,” both in literal sense and as a metaphor for leader, source, and authority.
- Sōma – “body,” used throughout the New Testament to refer to the collective people of God in Christ.
This metaphor reminds us that the Church is not man-made—it is Christ-born. It is not led by charisma—it is led by the Crucified One.
💎 A Diamond of Truth
Jesus is not detached from His Church—He is intimately connected. He feels what the body feels. He feeds it through His Word. He unifies it by His Spirit. He corrects it in love. And He will one day present it spotless and radiant at His coming.
To love Jesus is to love His Church. And to submit to Jesus is to follow His headship, not just personally—but corporately.
💬 Reflect and Respond
- Is Jesus the true Head of your life and your local church?
- Where have you trusted human systems over His leadership?
- How can you honor His authority in how you serve and worship?
Let Christ lead. Let His Word rule. Let His glory be your goal. For the Church has only one Head—and He will never fail His body.
