Dangerous Religion Part 2

Gatekeepers of Grace?

There are few things more devastating than someone hungry for God, only to be turned away by someone claiming to represent Him.

Jesus thunders:

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces.”
Matthew 23:13

This isn’t a mild rebuke. It’s a righteous roar.

I. The Blocking of Heaven’s Door

“You shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces.”

Visual Spotlight:
A Pharisee in ornate robes stands like a divine bouncer—guarding instead of guiding.

They aren’t just neutral—they’re active blockers.
“You shut the door.”
“You refuse to enter yourselves.”

They had the light… but became shadows.

  • They held the scrolls of Scripture.
  • They heard the voice of Jesus.
  • But they denied both—and dragged others down with them.

Cross-Reference: Luke 11:52 – “You have taken away the key of knowledge.”

II. The Tragedy of Influence Misused

“You neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.”

Character Contrast:
Those reaching for Heaven’s door—hungry, desperate.
The Pharisee—arms crossed, door barred.

Color Contrast from the Artwork:
Heaven’s light pours through the cracks.
Religious shadows darken the outside.

This is the danger of toxic religion—blocking the way to God while pretending to represent Him.

III. Modern Pharisees: Are We Guilty?

This wasn’t written only for ancient leaders—it’s for us.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do my words build bridges to Jesus or barricades?
  • Have I created rules God never wrote?
  • Am I more concerned with who deserves the gospel than who needs it?

“You neither enter…”
Some are surrounded by church, Scripture, and sound doctrine… but are still outside the kingdom.

IV. The Gospel is an Open Door

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.”
John 10:9

Jesus is the Door—not the Pharisees, not traditions, not titles.

No secret password. No robes. No performance.

The Kingdom is open to:

  • The sinner
  • The seeker
  • The outcast
  • The humble

“Whosoever will may come.”

Be a Door Opener, Not a Gatekeeper

Jesus is calling out a religion that blocks rather than blesses.

Ask yourself today:

  • Is my life inviting others in or pushing them away?
  • Am I guarding a gate that God flung open?

Let your witness be a welcome sign, not a warning label.

Reflection Questions

  • Have I ever shut someone out of the gospel with my pride or attitude?
  • Do I truly live as though Jesus is the only way—or do I add my own checkpoints?
  • Who needs to know this week that the door is still wide open?

Challenge for the Week

Find one person who seems far from God, and show them the door is open.
A simple conversation. A kind act. An invitation to Jesus.
You don’t guard the door. You open it.
