Who knows what this is? “two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.”
For those of us who remember this very popular jingle from the late 70s and 80’s we know it is the Big Mac. Unlike Burger King, it was not a “Have it your own way” sandwich but was made in a very particular way. I can hear some of you now “Where is Barry going with this?” Well, I want us to see today with my crude illustration the significance of the intricate details by which the Tabernacle was made. God gave Moses a very detailed plan and detail-oriented people to implement His plan. This was no ordinary tent but a sacred place to meet with God. As you may recall from many previous posts each article and the material was a physical representation of God’s Glory and His son Jesus. As we study today I hope you will discover yourself as we are His workmanship in Christ Jesus created unto good works.
Reading Exodus, chapters 35-40 provide a detailed account of the instructions given by God to Moses regarding the construction of the Tabernacle. This section emphasizes the importance of attention to detail in both work and worship. As we look into the intricate details of these chapters, we discover valuable lessons about dedicating our efforts to God and honoring Him in every aspect of our lives.
Focus verses: Exodus 40:33-34 ESV [33] And he erected the court around the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So Moses finished the work. [34] Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle
Workmanship and Obedience
In Exodus 35, God instructs Moses to gather the people and share the work required for the construction of the Tabernacle. The emphasis on skilled craftsmanship and obedience is evident. We too are called and gifted to join God in His work. It is imperative to understand that we are not doing something FOR God but WITH God. The work is God’s work we join Him in His work by faith and obedience.
Matthew 7:24-27: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
In the New Testament, the importance of obedience and application of God’s teachings is reiterated by Jesus. This verse in Matthew emphasizes not only hearing but actively practicing God’s words in our lives. James says, “we are not hearers only but doers of the WORK.” As we follow God’s plan we accomplish God’s work by His power.
Willing Hearts and Offerings
Chapter 36 highlights the willing hearts of the people as they bring offerings for the construction. Their generosity and eagerness to contribute demonstrate a community committed to honoring God with their resources.
2 Corinthians 9:7: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
The New Testament echoes the sentiment of cheerful giving, emphasizing the significance of one’s heart attitude in contributing to God’s work. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul encourages believers to give willingly and joyfully. Jesus gave it all to complete the work He was sent to do. Read John 17.
Attention to Detail
Attention to Detail: As the construction progresses in chapters 37-39, the meticulous details of each element, from the ark to the altar and the priestly garments, reveal the importance God places on precision and excellence in His service.
Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Colossians 3:23 in the New Testament reinforces the concept of working diligently, not just for human approval but as an offering to the Lord. The verse emphasizes a Christ-centered approach to work and service. We give gold, silver, and precious stones not wood, hay, and stubble. We give our best. The “that’s good enough” mentality is unacceptable. Jesus deserves our best as He gave His best. He did it God’s way at every point. We should pay close attention to detail and take heed as we build.
Sanctification and Holiness:
Exodus 38 and 40 highlights the making of the altar of burnt offerings, construction, consecration, and the basin for washing. These elements symbolize the need for sanctification and holiness in approaching God. It underscores the importance of a pure and consecrated heart in worship. We must come to God His way.
Hebrews 12:14: “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord.”
The New Testament in Hebrews 12:14 underscores the ongoing relevance of holiness in our lives. It emphasizes the pursuit of peace and holiness as essential elements in our relationship with God
Exodus 40 concludes the construction phase, highlighting the assembly of the Tabernacle and the consecration of the priests. This further emphasizes the need for sanctification and holiness in approaching God. It underscores the importance of a pure and consecrated heart in worship.
Exodus 35-40 reveals a profound message about the correlation between work and worship. The meticulous instructions for the tabernacle’s construction remind us that details matter to God. As we engage in our daily tasks and offer our worship, may we do so with willing hearts, attention to detail, and a commitment to honor God in every aspect of our lives. Just as the Israelites worked diligently to construct the Tabernacle, let us strive to work and worship God’s way, with excellence and devotion, drawing inspiration from the teachings of both the Old and New Testaments.
