“During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.” – Exodus 2:23–25 (ESV)
😢 When Groaning Becomes Prayer
There are times when pain runs so deep, we can’t even form words. Our grief is beyond grammar. Our distress spills out in sighs, moans, or silence. In Exodus 2, the Israelites didn’t recite polished prayers—they groaned. And God called it prayer.
They cried out—not from a pulpit, but from a place of suffering. And that cry—raw, broken, desperate—reached the ears of Heaven.
God hears what we cannot even say. There is no pain too deep, no grief too loud or quiet, no sigh too small that escapes His attention.
📢 “Their Cry… Came Up to God”
This was not a formal service. There were no temples, priests, or scrolls. Just broken people and a groaning plea. Yet Scripture says: “Their cry came up to God.”
This is not the only time Scripture captures the power of a cry. Here are just a few examples:
- 📖 Hagar: When cast into the desert with her son, Hagar wept—and God heard the boy crying and sent an angel to comfort her.
- 📖 Hannah: In 1 Samuel 1, Hannah’s mouth moved but no words came. Eli thought she was drunk—but God heard her unspoken anguish and opened her womb.
- 📖 David: “I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim…” (Psalm 6:6) Yet his cries became psalms sung for generations.
- 📖 Hezekiah: When told he would die, he turned to the wall and wept bitterly. God said, “I have heard your prayer and seen your tears.”
- 📖 Jesus: In Gethsemane, “He offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears…” (Hebrews 5:7) And the Father heard Him.
In every case, the voice of the suffering was not lost. It moved the heart of God.
🎯 Four Divine Responses
Look at how God responds in Exodus 2:
- “God heard…” – No voice is ignored, not even one drenched in pain.
- “God remembered…” – He never forgets His promises, even when we forget them ourselves.
- “God saw…” – He sees every wound, every injustice, every silent cry.
- “God knew.” – This isn’t mere awareness—it’s deep, compassionate understanding.
This is not a distant deity. This is the God who leans in, listens closely, and responds with power. The voice of suffering moves the hand of God.
⏳ What About the Waiting?
For 400 years, the Israelites waited. That’s longer than any of us could imagine enduring. And yet God was not absent. He was never inactive. Behind the scenes, He was preparing Moses, shaping a deliverer, and orchestrating a future.
God’s silence is never the same as His absence. In the waiting, He is working. Even when we feel forgotten, Heaven is attentive. Your timeline may feel stretched—but your cry has already reached Him.
📣 What This Means for Us Today
1. God Listens to Suffering—Not Just Sentences
You don’t need the right words. You don’t need perfect faith. What God responds to is honest surrender. He hears your sobs at midnight just as clearly as your praise at noon.
2. Your Cry Has Weight in Heaven
Exodus 2 tells us your voice is not small to God. When your cry comes up—God moves. Heaven begins shifting in response. Angels are dispatched. Answers begin forming. Healing begins flowing.
3. God Always Keeps His Covenant
God remembered His covenant. He hasn’t forgotten you. His promises are still active—even when it feels like nothing is happening. Trust the timeline of a covenant-keeping God.
🪞 Reflection and Application
- What cries in my life have I assumed went unheard?
- Am I holding back my pain from God—trying to be too strong?
- Can I surrender the timing and trust that God sees, hears, remembers, and knows?
🛐 Prayer
Lord, You are the God who hears the cries no one else does. Thank You for listening to the sound of my soul when words fail me. Remind me that my groaning reaches You, and that You are faithful to remember, to see, to know—and to act. Give me grace in the waiting and hope in the groaning. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Listening God — Psalm 116:1–2
Why do we keep praying when it feels like no one’s listening? Because the God of Scripture not only hears—He leans in to listen. In our next post, we’ll learn why the psalmist loved the Lord: because God heard him.
