Faith That Works – James 3:13-18 – Post 14

James 3:13–18 – Wisdom from Above

James 3:13–18 (ESV) – “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

🧠 What Does Wisdom Look Like?

James begins with a challenge: “Who is wise and understanding among you?” The answer is not found in titles, degrees, or eloquence. True wisdom, James says, is revealed in behavior—“by his good conduct… in the meekness of wisdom.”

Wisdom is not proven by words—but by works, and not with pride—but with meekness.

Meekness is not weakness. It’s power under control. It’s humility guided by heaven.

Proverbs 11:2 (ESV) – “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.”

😡 The Ugly Face of Earthly Wisdom

James exposes the counterfeit version of wisdom—what he calls “earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.” This kind of wisdom shows up in two poisonous attitudes:

  • Bitter jealousy – Resentment toward others’ success or favor
  • Selfish ambition – A drive for personal gain, position, or power

Wherever this kind of wisdom operates, James warns, “there will be disorder and every vile practice.” It creates chaos, confusion, and conflict—in families, churches, friendships, and ministries.

1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV) – “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…”

Check your fruit: Does your “wisdom” leave people more confused or more at peace?

☁️ Wisdom That Comes from Above

Now James gives the characteristics of “wisdom from above.” This list should be the mirror every believer uses to examine their heart:

  1. Pure – Clean in motive and holy in nature
  2. Peaceable – Not quarrelsome or combative
  3. Gentle – Gracious, kind, not harsh or aggressive
  4. Open to reason – Teachable, willing to yield
  5. Full of mercy – Quick to forgive, slow to criticize
  6. Full of good fruits – Producing tangible evidence of godliness
  7. Impartial – Free from favoritism or prejudice
  8. Sincere – Honest, without hypocrisy

This is what spiritual maturity looks like—not how much you know, but how you live and how you love.

Matthew 7:16 (ESV) – “You will recognize them by their fruits.”

🌾 A Harvest of Righteousness

James ends with a beautiful promise: “A harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” Godly wisdom produces peace, and peace multiplies righteousness.

If you want your life to bear a harvest that honors God, plant seeds of purity, humility, and peace.

Galatians 6:7–8 (KJV) – “For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
