Get ready to hear God speak

What does it take to hear the voice of God?

In Exodus 19, we witness one of the most awe-inspiring scenes in the entire Old Testament: God Himself descends in a thick cloud and speaks from the mountain in thunder and glory. But before that moment could come—the people had to prepare.

They didn’t casually stroll up Mount Sinai with coffee in hand. They weren’t multitasking or distracted. They were told to get ready, to wash, wait, and worship.

📖 Preparing to Hear from God

Exodus 19:9–11 (ESV)
[9] And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.” When Moses told the words of the people to the Lord, [10] the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments [11] and be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.”

God wanted to speak directly to His people—not just through Moses, but in His own majestic voice. He wanted them to see His glory and hear His Word. But it would require consecration. Preparation.

🌄 Remembering God’s Deliverance

Exodus 19:3–6 (ESV)
[3] While Moses went up to God, the Lord called to him out of the mountain… [4] ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. [5] Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession… [6] and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’

Before He speaks, God reminds them of what He’s done. He carried them out of Egypt. He brought them close. And now He invites them into deeper relationship—if they obey and prepare.

This moment on Sinai wasn’t just about law—it was about love. A covenant. A call to walk in holiness and hear from heaven.

🧼 Steps to Prepare: Wash. Wait. Worship.

God told Moses exactly how the people must get ready:

  • Wash their garments – physical cleansing symbolizing spiritual renewal
  • Consecrate themselves – a holy focus, setting apart time and heart for God
  • Abstain from distractions – including fleshly desires (v.15)

We need to do the same. How often do we approach worship carelessly? How often do we expect to receive from God without any preparation of our hearts?

They had been in the wilderness for three months. They were dusty, dirty, distracted. We too get spiritually dusty. We need the daily cleansing of God’s Word before we enter His presence.

Psalm 24:3–4 (ESV)
“Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart…”

God doesn’t want casual listeners—He wants consecrated hearers. Those who revere His Word, respect His holiness, and are willing to lay aside the noise of the world to hear His voice.

⚠️ Cross the Line—and Die

God warned Moses to set a boundary around the mountain. No one was to cross it. Why?

Exodus 19:21 (ESV)
“And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to the Lord to look and many of them perish.’”

God’s holiness is not to be treated lightly. If they approached Him on their terms and not His—they would die. It was that serious. And it still is.

We die a spiritual death when we treat God casually.
We lose sensitivity. We become hardened. We stop hearing His voice. The glory fades, and the Word no longer pierces our hearts.

If you’ve stopped hearing God speak—it may not be because He’s silent. It may be because we’ve stopped preparing.

🔄 How to Get Ready Again

Good news: there is a way back. God still wants to speak. His presence still descends. His Word still transforms. But we must prepare.

  • 🧽 Wash – Let the Word cleanse your heart (Ephesians 5:26)
  • 🙏 Consecrate – Set yourself apart in prayer and obedience
  • 💔 Repent – Lay aside sin, pride, and distraction
  • 👂 Listen – Tune your heart to hear the voice of the Spirit

James 4:8 (ESV)
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands… and purify your hearts…”

📌 Final Thoughts

God still speaks. He speaks through His Word, by His Spirit, and through His servants. But we must be ready to hear.

Get ready. Wash up. Slow down. Lean in.

The glory cloud may not rest on a mountain in front of you, but His presence still fills the hearts of those who seek Him in holiness.

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” 👂🔥
