God at Work When He Seems Silent (Esther 1–2)

Introduction
The book of Esther opens with a lavish Persian banquet and a drunken king, but beneath the noise of the palace is the quiet working of a sovereign God. His name is never mentioned, yet His fingerprints are everywhere. Esther’s rise to the throne is not luck or beauty alone, but providence moving pieces long before danger appears. This lesson helps believers recognize God’s hidden presence in their own silence-filled seasons.

The World of Esther: When Faith Lives Behind Enemy Lines

The story takes place in Susa, the capital of Persia, during the reign of King Ahasuerus. God’s people are scattered across the empire. Many have returned to Jerusalem, but many—like Esther and Mordecai—remain in exile. Even here, God is working.

Esther 2:5–7 (ESV)
“Now there was a Jew in Susa the citadel whose name was Mordecai… who had been carried away from Jerusalem… He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, the daughter of his uncle, for she had neither father nor mother…”

Her Hebrew name, Hadassah, means “myrtle”—a fragrant, evergreen plant symbolizing beauty, righteousness, and resilience. God gives her a name that mirrors her mission.

1. Vashti’s Fall — The First Unseen Step of Providence (Esther 1)

At a drunken feast, the king commands Queen Vashti to appear and display herself before the men. Her refusal leads to her removal. It feels political, even petty—but it creates a vacancy only Esther can fill.

Esther 1:19 (ESV)
“…let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she.”

What looks like palace drama is providential preparation.

Pastoral Insight:
God is orchestrating long before He is revealing. Many of His greatest works begin with circumstances that make no sense at all.

2. Esther’s Rise — God Positions Before He Purposes (Esther 2)

Esther is gathered among many young women brought to the harem. Yet she stands out—not merely because she is beautiful, but because she is humble, wise, and respectful.

Esther 2:17 (ESV)
“And the king loved Esther more than all the women, and she won grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins…”

Her elevation is a divine setup. God places people in roles long before He reveals why.

3. Mordecai’s Loyalty — Preserving the Future Deliverer (Esther 2:19–23)

Mordecai discovers an assassination plot and reports it. The event seems minor—recorded and forgotten. But later, it becomes the turning point of the entire story.

Esther 2:23 (ESV)
“When the affair was investigated and found to be so, the men were both hanged on the gallows. And it was recorded in the book of the chronicles…”

Life Application:
Nothing done for God is wasted. The things we think no one notices are written in God’s book, and He uses them in His timing.

  • He positions us before He reveals our purpose.
  • Nothing is coincidence; everything is providence.
  • Esther’s quiet faith and Mordecai’s integrity show how God uses ordinary obedience to shape extraordinary deliverance.
