Walking in the Light — Advocacy and Obedience
Key theme: True assurance rests in Christ’s advocacy, is confirmed by obedience, and is expressed by walking as Jesus walked.
Introduction: Assurance Without Excuses
As we continue our verse-by-verse journey through 1 John, the apostle now addresses a tension every believer feels: how grace and obedience fit together.
John writes with pastoral tenderness—“my little children”—yet with uncompromising clarity. Grace is never a license to sin, and obedience is never a means of earning salvation. In this passage, we see how Christ’s advocacy secures forgiveness, while obedience confirms genuine faith.
1. Jesus Christ — Our Advocate (1 John 2:1)
1 John 2:1 (ESV)
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
John’s aim is holiness—“that you may not sin.” Yet he immediately acknowledges reality: believers still stumble. Our hope is not found in denial, but in provision.
Jesus is our advocate—one who speaks on our behalf before the Father. He does not argue our innocence; He presents His righteousness. Our defense rests entirely on His finished work.
Christ’s advocacy is effective because He is righteous, He has satisfied divine justice, and He stands in the presence of the Father.
Old Testament Connection
Isaiah 53:12 (ESV)
“He bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.”
Reflection Questions
- What comfort do you find in knowing Jesus intercedes for you?
- How does Christ’s righteousness secure your assurance?
2. Propitiation and Obedience — Evidence of Knowing God (1 John 2:2–3)
1 John 2:2–3 (ESV)
“He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.”
The word propitiation reminds us that God’s righteous wrath against sin has been fully satisfied through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
Grace always comes before obedience, but grace never leaves obedience behind. Obedience does not save us—it reveals that we truly know Christ.
Old Testament Connection
Deuteronomy 6:5 (ESV)
“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”
Reflection Questions
- Why is obedience a fruit of genuine faith?
- How does love for Christ motivate submission to His commands?
3. Walking as Jesus Walked — Mature Faith in Action (1 John 2:4–6)
1 John 2:4–6 (ESV)
“Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
John contrasts profession with practice. Words without obedience expose empty faith. Where obedience is present, the love of God is being perfected—brought to maturity.
To abide in Christ is to live in daily dependence on Him. The evidence of abiding is imitation. We are called not only to believe in Jesus, but to walk as He walked.
Old Testament Connection
Micah 6:8 (ESV)
“He has told you, O man, what is good… to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Reflection Questions
- What does walking as Jesus walked look like in your daily life?
- Where is God calling you to deeper obedience?
Practical Application — Advocacy, Obedience, and Imitation
- Rest in Christ’s advocacy when you fail
- Obey from love, not fear
- Model your attitudes and actions after Jesus
A Gospel Invitation
If you are burdened by guilt or uncertainty, know this: Jesus Christ stands ready to forgive and restore. He is both the sacrifice for sin and the advocate for sinners.
Come to Him in repentance and faith.
Conclusion
1 John 2:1–6 assures us that salvation rests in Christ’s finished work, while our walk reflects the reality of that salvation. We are forgiven through His advocacy, transformed through obedience, and shaped through imitation.
