“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” – Hebrews 1:1–2 (ESV)
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27 (ESV)
🔊 The God Who Still Speaks
The Bible opens with the voice of God: “Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3) It closes with the voice of Jesus saying, “Surely I am coming soon.” (Revelation 22:20) From beginning to end, ours is a God who speaks.
Hebrews 1 reminds us that God once spoke “through the prophets,” but now He speaks through His Son. Jesus is not just the messenger—He is the message.
The voice that called Abraham, spoke from the burning bush, thundered at Sinai, whispered to Elijah, and walked in Galilee still speaks today.
🐑 My Sheep Hear My Voice
In John 10, Jesus paints a picture of a good shepherd with His flock. “My sheep hear My voice… and they follow Me.”
God’s voice is not a relic of the past. It is living, personal, and present. But the promise is also an invitation: to be close enough to hear Him.
- 👂 Sheep know their shepherd’s voice because they’ve spent time with him.
- 🧎 They trust his call, even when they don’t understand the path.
- 🐾 They follow, not because of force, but because of relationship.
The question is never, “Is God still speaking?” The question is, “Am I listening?”
📖 Ways God Still Speaks
1. Through His Word (The Bible)
“All Scripture is breathed out by God…” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible remains the primary, most reliable way God speaks. Every word points to Jesus.
2. Through His Spirit
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit…” (Romans 8:16). The Holy Spirit whispers comfort, conviction, wisdom, and guidance.
3. Through Circumstances
Open and closed doors, divine delays, unexpected opportunities—God orchestrates moments to guide us.
4. Through Creation
“The heavens declare the glory of God…” (Psalm 19:1). The beauty of the natural world echoes the creativity of its Creator.
5. Through Other Believers
Wise counsel, prophetic encouragement, and Spirit-filled teaching are ways God speaks through His people.
💡 How Can We Learn to Hear?
Hearing God is not about mastering a technique. It’s about deepening a relationship.
- 📖 Stay rooted in Scripture.
- 🧎 Create quiet space in a noisy world.
- 🙏 Stay in continual prayer and conversation.
- 👂 Be willing to obey what you hear, even if it’s hard.
- 🤝 Walk in community with others who seek His voice too.
📣 What This Means for Us Today
1. God Is Still Speaking Into Your Life
He hasn’t gone silent. The same God who spoke to prophets, disciples, and apostles speaks to you.
2. Hearing Is Tied to Following
“My sheep hear My voice… and they follow Me.” Hearing God leads to action. Listening is incomplete without obedience.
3. God’s Voice Always Aligns With His Word
God will never speak in contradiction to Scripture. The voice of Jesus and the voice of Scripture are always in perfect harmony.
🪞 Reflection and Application
- Am I making space in my life to hear God’s voice daily?
- Do I respond in obedience when I sense His leading?
- What might God be speaking to me through Scripture, the Spirit, or circumstances right now?
🛐 Prayer
Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd. Help me hear Your voice above all others. Quiet the noise around me and within me. Teach me to recognize Your leading and follow You in trust. Speak, Lord—I am listening. In Your name I pray, amen.
