Exodus 28:1-4 ESV
[1] “Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the people of Israel, to serve me as priests—Aaron and Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. [2] And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. [3] You shall speak to all the skillful, whom I have filled with a spirit of skill, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood. [4] These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a coat of checker work, a turban, and a sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons to serve me as priests.”
👔 How do we dress for church? Are we concerned with our appearance? How about Easter Sunday—do we wear a new dress or tie? Do we wonder how others will see us or if our spouse will be impressed? We may ask, “Does this outfit reflect that I represent the Kingdom of God?” We often spend more time thinking about how we look than how we live. But God’s people are called kings and priests. Is His glory and beauty visible in your life? For the High Priest of Israel, the answer was unmistakably yes.
🧵 Introduction
Exodus 28 introduces us to the sacred attire of the high priest—garments made for glory and for beauty. Each piece of clothing had deep symbolic meaning, pointing beyond itself to eternal truths. These garments not only reflected the holiness of the Tabernacle but also served as prophetic shadows of our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ. In this study, we’ll explore the priestly garments in detail and uncover how they illustrate Christ’s ministry and the righteousness that clothes every believer.
🌟 Bringing God’s Glory and Beauty Outside the Veil
Only the High Priest entered the Holy of Holies, but the garments he wore allowed the people to catch a glimpse of the inner glory of God’s dwelling place. His outward appearance revealed an inner reality. The colors, materials, and design of his clothing directly mirrored the Tabernacle’s interior. This visible connection reminded Israel that their God was holy, glorious, and beautiful—and their worship must reflect that.
🎨 The Meaning of the Colors
🔵 Blue – A color linked with the heavens, blue reminds us of God’s divine law and heavenly authority.
📖 Scripture: Numbers 15:38–39
💜 Purple – Symbolizing royalty and majesty, purple points to God’s kingship and Christ’s identity as King of Kings.
📖 Scripture: Mark 15:17
🔴 Scarlet – This deep red represents sacrifice and the atoning blood.
📖 Scripture: Isaiah 1:18
🏆 Gold – A symbol of divinity, purity, and value.
📖 Scripture: Exodus 25:10-22
🪡 The Beauty of the Design
The high priest’s garments were finely crafted from linen, gold thread, and precious stones. The ephod and breastplate featured twelve stones representing the tribes of Israel—six names on each shoulder (onyx stones) and twelve over the heart. This showed he carried the people in strength and in love.
He was also anointed with oil (Exodus 29:7), symbolizing the Holy Spirit’s presence. 🕊️ And the Urim and Thummim—placed in the breastpiece—were mysterious tools for discerning God’s will, showing how God’s guidance flowed through the consecrated priest.
👕 The Glory of Each Garment
The Ephod: Woven with gold, blue, purple, and scarlet. It bore onyx stones with six tribes each—reminding us that Jesus bears us before God with strength.
📖 Hebrews 4:14–16 – “Since then we have a great high priest… let us then with confidence draw near…”
The Breastpiece: Featured twelve gemstones over the heart—symbolizing Christ’s intercession with compassion.
📖 Hebrews 7:25 – “He always lives to make intercession…”
The Robe: Seamless and blue, with bells and pomegranates. Jesus’ robe at the crucifixion was seamless—signifying unity and holiness.
📖 John 19:23–24
The Turban & Golden Plate: Engraved with “Holy to the Lord.” This declared his consecration, reminding us of our calling as a royal priesthood.
📖 1 Peter 2:9
