Is “Being Spiritual Is Better Than Being Biblical” in the Bible?
This article is part of the Daily Diamonds series Things People Think Are in the Bible (But Aren’t).
In recent years, many people have said, “I’m spiritual, not religious,” or even, “It’s better to be spiritual than biblical.” The implication is that spirituality is flexible, personal, and authentic—while being biblical feels rigid or restrictive. But does Scripture ever separate spirituality from the Bible?
This question strikes at the heart of how we define faith.
The Saying
“I’m spiritual, but I don’t want to be boxed in by the Bible.”
The assumption is that spirituality can flourish apart from Scripture.
The Problem
The Bible never presents spirituality as self-defined or detached from God’s revealed Word.
If spirituality is shaped by personal feeling rather than divine revelation, it becomes subjective and unstable. One person’s “spiritual truth” may directly contradict another’s.
This idea connects closely to “Speak Your Truth” and “Follow Your Heart.” In each case, the center shifts from God’s authority to personal preference.
What the Bible Actually Says
True spirituality in Scripture is rooted in the Spirit of God and the Word of God.
Jesus said:
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:24 (ESV)
Notice the balance—spirit and truth, not spirit without truth.
Paul writes:
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)
Spiritual maturity grows through submission to God’s revealed Word.
The Truth
The Bible does not teach that being spiritual is better than being biblical.
It teaches that true spirituality is shaped by Scripture.
The Holy Spirit does not contradict the Word He inspired. He illuminates it, applies it, and uses it to transform believers.
Spirituality divorced from Scripture quickly drifts into self-made religion.
Living It Out
If you desire spiritual growth, immerse yourself in God’s Word. Pray for the Spirit’s guidance. Align your feelings with truth rather than reshaping truth around your feelings.
The goal is not cold legalism—but informed devotion.
The gospel itself stands on revealed truth. As explored more fully in Romans 1:1–7 Explains What the Gospel of God Truly Is, faith rests not on private spirituality but on God’s historic and revealed work in Christ.
To be truly spiritual is to be deeply biblical.
A Short Prayer
Father, guard me from redefining spirituality on my own terms. Fill me with Your Spirit and anchor me in Your Word. Shape my heart through truth and lead me into faithful obedience. Amen.
