Is “Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness” in the Bible?
This article is part of the Daily Diamonds series Things People Think Are in the Bible (But Aren’t).
Many people assume the phrase “Cleanliness is next to godliness” comes straight from Scripture. It sounds biblical. It even feels moral and upright. But does the Bible actually say this?
The phrase is widely quoted in homes, schools, and churches—but it does not appear anywhere in the Bible.
The Saying
“Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
The idea suggests that physical neatness and hygiene are closely tied to spiritual maturity.
The Problem
While the Bible certainly values order and discipline, it never equates outward cleanliness with inward holiness.
This phrase can subtly shift focus from the heart to appearance. It may lead people to believe that external presentation reflects spiritual standing.
This misconception connects with other ideas we’ve addressed, such as “Follow Your Heart” and “Love Means Approval.” In each case, the issue is misplaced emphasis.
What the Bible Actually Says
Jesus addressed this very issue when confronting religious hypocrisy:
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.”
Matthew 23:25 (ESV)
He continued:
“First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.”
Matthew 23:26 (ESV)
Scripture consistently prioritizes the condition of the heart:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God.”
Psalm 51:10 (ESV)
The emphasis is not on spotless surroundings, but on a transformed spirit.
The Truth
The Bible does not say that cleanliness is next to godliness.
It teaches that godliness flows from a renewed heart.
External order may reflect discipline, but it does not guarantee devotion.
Holiness begins inwardly and works outward—not the other way around.
Living It Out
Keeping a tidy home or practicing good hygiene is wise and responsible. But do not mistake external order for spiritual maturity.
Ask instead: Is my heart clean before the Lord? Am I walking in repentance, humility, and obedience?
True godliness is measured not by appearance, but by Christlike character.
A Short Prayer
Father, cleanse my heart before You. Help me focus on inward transformation more than outward appearance. Shape my life from the inside out for Your glory. Amen.
