Daily Diamonds sounds Biblical but isn't

Is “Money Is the Root of All Evil” in the Bible?

This article is part of the Daily Diamonds series Things People Think Are in the Bible (But Aren’t).

Many people confidently quote this phrase: “Money is the root of all evil.” It is often used to criticize wealth, business, or financial success. But does the Bible actually say that money itself is evil?

The verse most often cited is real—but the wording is frequently misunderstood.

The Saying

“Money is the root of all evil.”

The implication is that money itself is inherently sinful and the source of every moral problem.

The Problem

The Bible never says that money is the root of all evil.

Money is a tool. It can be used wisely or wickedly. Scripture does not condemn wealth itself; it warns against misplaced devotion.

This misconception connects with other ideas we’ve addressed, such as “God Just Wants Me to Be Happy” and “Grace Means God Doesn’t Care How We Live.” In each case, the issue is the heart, not the external object.

What the Bible Actually Says

The apostle Paul writes:

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”
1 Timothy 6:10 (ESV)

Notice the difference. It is not money itself—but the love of money.

Scripture also teaches that wealth can be used for good:

“As for the rich in this present age… they are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.”
1 Timothy 6:17–18 (ESV)

The problem is not possession—it is obsession.

The Truth

The Bible does not say that money is the root of all evil.

It warns that the love of money can lead to many kinds of evil.

Money reveals the heart. It exposes what we truly trust.

When wealth becomes our security, identity, or ultimate goal, it replaces God.

Living It Out

Ask yourself honestly: Do I trust money more than I trust the Lord? Does financial gain shape my priorities more than obedience does?

Money can be a blessing when stewarded wisely. It becomes destructive when worshiped.

Jesus said plainly:

“You cannot serve God and money.”
Matthew 6:24 (ESV)

The gospel frees us from slavery to wealth and teaches us to steward resources for eternal purposes.

A Short Prayer

Father, guard my heart from loving money more than You. Teach me to steward what You provide wisely and generously. Help me seek first Your kingdom above all else. Amen.
