Is the Bible Full of Contradictions?
This article is part of the Daily Diamonds series Things People Think Are in the Bible (But Aren’t).
One of the most common claims made about Scripture is that it is full of contradictions. Some assume that because the Bible was written over many centuries by different authors, it must contain conflicting ideas and errors.
You may have heard someone say, “The Bible contradicts itself,” as a reason for dismissing its authority.
But is that what we actually find when we examine the Bible carefully?
The Saying
“The Bible is full of contradictions.”
This statement suggests that Scripture cannot be trusted because its teachings are inconsistent or self-conflicting.
The Problem
The problem with this claim is that it often arises from misunderstandings, incomplete readings, or taking verses out of context.
The Bible is a collection of 66 books written across different times, cultures, and literary styles. Because of this, careful reading is required to understand how its parts fit together.
This misunderstanding connects closely with other questions we have explored, such as “Was the Bible Written by Men Alone?” and “Did the Church Decide What Books Went Into the Bible?”
Rather than being a collection of conflicting ideas, Scripture presents a unified message centered on God’s redemptive plan.
What the Bible Actually Says
The Bible consistently affirms its own truthfulness. The psalmist writes:
“The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.”
Psalm 119:160 (ESV)
Jesus Himself affirmed the reliability of Scripture:
“Your word is truth.”
John 17:17 (ESV)
While there are passages that may appear difficult or complex, careful study reveals that the Bible speaks with a consistent voice about God, humanity, sin, and salvation.
Many apparent contradictions are resolved when we consider context, audience, and the purpose of each passage.
The Truth
The Bible is not full of contradictions. It is a unified revelation of God’s truth given through many authors across time.
What may appear to be contradictions are often opportunities to study more deeply and understand Scripture more fully.
The more closely the Bible is examined, the more its consistency becomes clear.
Living It Out
Instead of dismissing Scripture when we encounter a difficult passage, we are invited to study it carefully and humbly.
God’s Word rewards those who seek to understand it.
When questions arise, they should not drive us away from the Bible but deeper into it.
A Short Prayer
Father, thank You for giving us Your Word. Help me approach Scripture with humility and a desire to understand, trusting that Your truth is consistent and reliable. Amen.
