Is This the Man? — When We See How Little the Devil Really Is

Isaiah 14:15–16 (ESV) — “But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit. Those who see you will stare at you and ponder over you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms?’”

There is coming a day when the great deceiver — who has terrified nations and tormented souls — will be fully exposed. The shock will not only be his defeat, but his smallness. The veil will lift, and the one who claimed to rival God will be revealed for what he is: a created, corrupted, and conquered spirit.

🔥 1️⃣ The Fall of the Proud One

Isaiah 14:12–15 (KJV) — “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God… Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”

Every “I will” of Satan met its end at God’s “You shall.” His pride met divine power; his rebellion met ruin. What began as angelic aspiration ends in eternal humiliation. When the Lord brings him low, humanity will look with astonishment and ask, “Is this the one?”

💎 Insight

Satan’s power is largely perceptual. He magnifies himself through lies and fear. The more we fear him, the larger he seems; the more we worship Christ, the smaller he becomes.

🐍 2️⃣ The Serpent’s True Size

Genesis 3:1 (ESV) — “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.”

He slithers, whispers, and deceives — but he does not create. He cannot give life; he corrupts it. Note the emphasis: he was made. Satan is not God’s opposite; he is a fallen creature. The Creator and the creature are never equals. The devil is limited, finite, and ultimately disposable in God’s plan of redemption.

✝️ 3️⃣ The Cross Shrinks the Enemy

Colossians 2:15 (ESV) — “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

At Calvary, Jesus stripped hell’s hierarchy of true authority. The devil’s sharpest weapon — accusation — was shattered by atonement. His claim over believers was canceled by blood. He remains dangerous, but only within the leash of divine sovereignty.

🌤️ Hopeful Truth

The cross didn’t merely defeat Satan; it diminished him. The roar of the lion was silenced by the Lamb; the shadow that loomed over us shrank in the light of the Resurrection.

👁️ 4️⃣ Heaven’s Perspective on Hell’s Power

Revelation 12:9–11 (ESV) — “And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world — he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.’”

Heaven doesn’t marvel at Satan’s might — it celebrates his downfall. His “power” is exposed as accusation, not dominion; and the saints overcome him by the blood of the Lamb. Isaiah’s taunt-song is already echoing in Revelation’s victory song.

🪞 5️⃣ The Illusion of Magnitude

1 John 4:4 (ESV) — “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

The enemy inflates his shadow to make God seem smaller and sin seem safer. But the truth stands: Christ in us is greater. Light reveals the devil’s true size and restores our courage.

⚔️ Spiritual Application

We fear the enemy most when we forget his place: under Christ’s feet and beneath ours. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20).

🏁 6️⃣ When We Finally See Clearly

Revelation 20:1–3 (ESV) — “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer.”

Note the power dynamic: not Christ Himself, not an army — one unnamed angel binds him. Heaven does not strain to subdue the devil. When God decrees it, he is done.

Revelation 20:10 (ESV) — “And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

Hell is not Satan’s throne but his prison. He will not reign; he will writhe. Isaiah 14:16 finds its fulfillment here: all will look and say, “Is this the one who shook kingdoms?” The proud one is publicly exposed, bound, and banished.

Revelation 21:4–5 (ESV) — “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’”

In eternity, the enemy is not only defeated — he is forgotten among the “former things.” The shadow that once haunted history disappears in the glory of the Lamb.

📌 Takeaway Truth (Isaiah → Revelation)

  • Isaiah 14: Pride exalted — and brought low. “Is this the man?”
  • Revelation 12: The accuser thrown down — overcome by the blood of the Lamb.
  • Revelation 20: Bound by one angel — then thrown into the lake of fire.
  • Revelation 21: “All things new” — evil minimized to a memory, Christ maximized forever.

🎯 Bottom Line

We will not be surprised that Satan is judged — we will be surprised how small he looks next to the glory of Jesus. The One who descended to crush the serpent stands infinitely greater; our adversary was never big — our fears were.

💭 Reflection

What power are you giving to what Christ has already crushed? Every fear that looms large today will look small in eternity. Fix your eyes on the size of your Savior, not the shadow of your enemy.

🙌 Call to Action

Worship boldly. Pray confidently. Live victoriously. Speak the name of Jesus over every fear. Every time you do, the shadow shrinks and the Savior shines.

FAQ

Q: Is Satan God’s equal opposite?
A: No. Satan is a created being (Genesis 3:1). God alone is eternal, sovereign, and omnipotent (Isaiah 40:28). The Creator and the creature are never equals.

Q: If Satan is defeated, why does he still attack?
A: He is defeated legally at the cross (Colossians 2:15) but remains active until his final judgment (Revelation 20:10). Believers resist him by faith (1 Peter 5:8–9; Ephesians 6:10–18).

Q: How do we keep his shadow small?
A: Stay in the Word, walk in the Spirit, gather with the church, practice confession and prayer, and exalt Christ in worship (1 John 4:4; James 4:7–8).
