Welcome to Part 9 of our Jude series! šļø After urging us to build ourselves up in faith and stay in Godās love (Jude 20ā21), Jude now shifts the focus outward. This passage shows us that the battle for truth is not just defensiveāitās redemptive. We are called to engage with mercy, reach out with compassion, and rescue those being pulled into the flames of deception. Letās explore Jude 22ā23 with grace and urgency. š„
š Scripture: Jude 22ā23 (ESV)
And have mercy on those who doubt;
save others by snatching them out of the fire;
to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.
š¤ Three Kinds of People, One Call: Mercy
Jude outlines three different groups of people in spiritual danger, and gives us three different responsesāall rooted in mercy.
1. The Doubters ā āHave mercy on those who doubtā
These are sincere souls who are struggling. Perhaps theyāre confused by false teaching, wounded by church hurt, or weakened by trials. Our response? Mercy, not mockery. Patience, not pressure. Donāt treat doubters as enemiesātreat them as sheep who need guidance. š
2. The Drowning ā āSave others by snatching them out of the fireā
This group is in immediate danger. The fire here may allude to Godās judgment (as in Amos 4:11 or Zechariah 3:2). These are people caught in destructive deception or sin. Jude says: Snatch them out! Donāt wait. Donāt watch. Act. Speak truth in love and intervene before itās too late. āļø
3. The Defiled ā āTo others show mercy with fearā¦ā
These are deeply corruptedāthose immersed in sin or seduced by perversion. Here, mercy must be paired with caution. We are called to reach outābut not be pulled in. Jude uses strong imagery: āhating even the garment stained by the flesh.ā This reflects the Levitical law, where contaminated clothing represented uncleanness (Leviticus 13:47ā52).
Evangelism is not without risk. When rescuing someone from fire, you must not catch fire yourself. We must reach sinners without becoming desensitized to sin.
š„ Key Truth: Courageous Compassion
Contending for the faith includes contending for people. Jude doesnāt tell us to run from the wounded or judge the deceivedāhe calls us to engage with discernment and mercy. This is love in action. š”ļøā¤ļø
We cannot stay passive while others are perishing. And we cannot lose our balance while weāre reaching. We must hold fast to holiness while extending hands of grace.
š Application for Today
- š§āāļø Pray for discernment ā Ask God to help you see which response is needed: gentle mercy, urgent rescue, or cautious outreach.
- š£ļø Speak truth boldly, but tenderly ā Never compromise truth, but never weaponize it either.
- 𧤠Stay clean while you engage ā Like a firefighter wears gear, guard your heart with Scripture, prayer, and accountability.
- š« Engage the doubters, the drifters, and the defiled ā Mercy is your ministry. Donāt just contendācompassionately rescue.
šļø Spiritual Typology
In Zechariah 3, the high priest Joshua stood before the Lord clothed in filthy garmentsāuntil the Lord commanded, āRemove the filthy garments⦠I have taken your iniquity awayā (Zechariah 3:3ā4). Jude echoes this same image. We are called to rescue people like Joshuaāpulling them from shame to salvation, from garments of sin to robes of righteousness. šā”ļøš
š Prayer
Father, give us merciful hearts and discerning minds. Help us reach the doubting with compassion, rescue the wandering with boldness, and guard our own hearts in the process. May we never become hardened to sināor indifferent to the perishing. Teach us to love like You do. In Jesusā name, Amen.
š Coming Next: Kept for Glory
In Part 10, weāll conclude this rich letter with Judeās breathtaking doxology. Get ready to rejoice in the One who is able to keep you from falling and present you blameless in glory. Itās the perfect finale to this call to stand, rescue, and remain. šļøš
