Jude 5-7 – Contenders and Consequences: Learning from the Past

Dear friends, welcome back to our powerful journey through the book of Jude! 👋 In Part 1, we marveled at God’s calling, loving, and keeping power (Jude 1–2). In Part 2, we heard Jude’s passionate plea to “contend for the faith” (Jude 3–4). Now, in Part 3, we’ll walk through history’s warning signs. Jude 5–7 is a call to remember what happens when truth is rejected and rebellion is embraced. These verses are strong medicine—but they bring life to those who receive them. 💊🔥

📖 Scripture: Jude 5–7 (ESV)

Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

📜 A Call to Remember

Before Jude tells us what to do next, he reminds us where we came from. “I want to remind you…” he says. That Greek word means to stir up something you already know—because we’re prone to forget what God has clearly shown. These three historical events are not dusty stories from long ago. They are living warnings for today’s church. ⚠️

🏜️ 1. Israel: Saved but Not Faithful

“Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe” (Jude 5)

Wait—Jesus brought them out of Egypt? Yes! Jude makes a bold theological statement here: the same Jesus who saves is also the righteous Judge. He delivered Israel from Pharaoh’s grip, but when they murmured, doubted, and rebelled, He also brought judgment (Numbers 14:26–35).

📌 Insight:
Deliverance is not a license for disobedience. You can come out of Egypt and still miss the Promised Land if you do not believe and obey.

Many today rejoice in salvation, yet ignore the daily call to walk in faith. God brought us out of bondage, not just to wander, but to worship. 🙌

👼 2. The Angels: Abandoning God’s Boundaries

“The angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness…” (Jude 6)

This mysterious verse likely refers to Genesis 6—where some angels rebelled by crossing boundaries God had set. Whether spiritual pride or moral transgression, these angels abandoned their assigned post. And they are now held in chains, awaiting judgment. 🪤

🧭 Application:
Stay in your God-given lane. When we reject the roles and boundaries God sets—whether in gender, marriage, ministry, or worship—we invite destruction, not freedom.

Even celestial beings aren’t exempt from God’s justice. What a sobering reminder: privilege never replaces obedience.

🔥 3. Sodom and Gomorrah: Sin Without Shame

“Sodom and Gomorrah… indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire… undergoing a punishment of eternal fire” (Jude 7)

Jude connects the angels’ rebellion with the sins of Sodom. Both ignored God’s design and pursued selfish lust. Genesis 19 shows us a society where sin was celebrated and righteousness mocked. Sound familiar?

It’s not just about one type of sin—it’s about the refusal to repent. These cities serve as a visual prophecy of what awaits a world that chooses darkness over light. ⚖️

🔥 Typology Alert:
Just as fire rained down on Sodom, eternal judgment awaits all who reject God’s lordship. But through Christ, we can be rescued—even from fire (Jude 23).

🗝️ Key Truth: God’s Judgment Is Just

These three examples form a trilogy of rebellion: Israel rejected faith, angels rejected authority, and Sodom rejected purity. Jude says: “Don’t forget what happens when grace is abused and truth is trampled.”

He is not writing to condemn us—but to awaken us. God’s judgment is not vengeful—it is holy. And it is certain. đź’Ż

đź’Ş How Should We Respond?

  • đź“– Stay grounded in the Word – Let Scripture shape your worldview, not social media or public opinion.
  • 🧎‍♂️ Walk in humble obedience – Obedience is how faith breathes.
  • 🔥 Flee from sin – Don’t flirt with what God has judged. Pursue purity and truth.
  • 🙏 Pray for discernment – Ask the Holy Spirit to expose deception in your own heart and community.

🙏 Prayer

Father, thank You for Your Word that warns and protects. Thank You for showing us that Your judgments are not just past events—but present lessons. Help us walk in faith like Joshua, not fall in unbelief like those in the wilderness. Keep us from pride, impurity, and rebellion. Make us holy, humble, and hopeful—until the day we see Jesus. In His mighty name, Amen.
