How Do You Respond When God Shows Up?

Text: Exodus 20:18–21 (ESV)

“Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off and said to Moses, ‘You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.’ Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.’ The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.”

🔥 When God Comes Down

The people of Israel had gathered at the base of Mount Sinai. The mountain trembled. Thunder cracked. Lightning flashed. Smoke billowed like a furnace. A trumpet blasted from heaven, and the very voice of God thundered in their ears. It was indescribable. Overwhelming. Terrifying.

In fact, the language Moses uses here is extreme. The Hebrew words describing their fear include: quaking, shaking, trembling, and staggering. They weren’t just uncomfortable—they were undone.

😨 FEAR OR FAITH?
Every time God manifests His presence in Scripture, the immediate human response is fear. But fear isn’t the end goal—God wants fear to lead us closer, not drive us away.

⛰️ Standing Afar Off

At first, the people were eager. They had followed Moses to the mountain to meet with God. But when the smoke rolled in and the thunder rumbled, they backed away—as far as twelve miles off, according to Jewish tradition!

“Moses, you go for us,” they pleaded. “We’ll listen to what you say, but don’t let God speak directly to us—we’ll die.”

📖 Deuteronomy 5:4–5 (ESV)

“The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, while I stood between the Lord and you at that time… For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain.”

What a tragedy. They were given the invitation of intimacy—and they declined. They heard God speak and lived, but still preferred distance. How many of us are content to hear about God through others—through pastors, podcasts, or books—rather than drawing near ourselves?

🙇 APPLICATION:
Don’t settle for secondhand spirituality. God invites you to climb the mountain. Don’t just stand in the crowd. Step into the cloud.

🧗 Moses Went Up

While the people stood far off, Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was (Exodus 20:21). He didn’t run. He approached. And as a result, he was changed forever.

Later, when Moses came down, his face glowed with the glory of God (Exodus 34:29). You can’t live in the smoke and not come out transformed.

👣 Spiritual Principle:

The place that terrifies the flesh is the place that transforms the soul.

It’s in the smoke, the fire, the thick cloud, that God tests us—so that the holy fear of Him will keep us from sin. This fear is not panic, but reverence, awe, and surrender.

🗣️ “We Have Heard God and Still Lived”

Later in Deuteronomy, the people said something astonishing:

“This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.” (Deuteronomy 5:24)

God showed them that He is glorious, holy, and dangerous—but also merciful. His goal was never to drive them away but to draw them in, to say: You can hear My voice and live.

💡 INSIGHT:
God’s fire doesn’t consume those who trust—it cleanses them. His presence isn’t to be avoided but embraced. Don’t run from the smoke; run into it. That’s where God is.

🏠 “And I Will Dwell…”

David understood it best. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6).

He wasn’t afraid to dwell in God’s presence. He desired it. He longed to live where the smoke of God’s glory filled the room. Like Isaiah, who said, “Here am I, send me.” Like John, who said, “We have handled the Word of Life.”

Jesus invited Thomas to touch His scars. He didn’t rebuke him—He welcomed him in. That’s the kind of God we serve. Holy and glorious—yet approachable and full of mercy.

🔥 Final Thought

Let God’s greatness and glory consume you. Not with destruction, but with devotion. Don’t settle for tents in the valley when you’ve been invited up the mountain. Don’t just listen to the preacher—walk into the presence.

“Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!”
—Deuteronomy 5:29

Let’s live in the smoke. In awe. In reverence. In wonder. Until the day we see Him face to face.
