Genesis 18:16–33
God saves us not only to sit in His presence — but to stand in the gap for others. Abraham becomes the first recorded intercessor in Scripture, a friend of God pleading for the lost. He prefigures Jesus, who not only stood before God for sinners, but hung before God as the sacrifice for sinners.
1) God Shares — His Friends Care
Genesis 18:16–19
“Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. The Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.’”
God lets Abraham see what He sees so Abraham can feel what He feels. This is divine friendship — revelation before intercession.
John 17:6 — “I have manifested Your name to the people whom You gave Me out of the world.”
Spiritual Truth: God confides in those who abide. Fellowship with God produces burden for people.
2) God Sees — His People Grieve
Genesis 18:20–21
“Then the Lord said, ‘Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to Me. And if not, I will know.’”
Heaven hears the cries of injustice. Sin cries upward — and God sees and responds.
John 17:14–15 — “I have given them Your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world… I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.”
Spiritual Truth: God’s people feel what God feels. His burden becomes our burden.
3) God Stands — The Saint Stands
Genesis 18:22
“So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.”
Others walk toward judgment — Abraham walks toward intercession. The angels move; Abraham remains.
Hebrews 7:25 — “He always lives to make intercession for them.”
Spiritual Truth: Before we stand before people, we must stand before God. Intercession begins in His presence.
4) God Is Just — So We Trust
Genesis 18:23–25
“Then Abraham drew near and said, ‘Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will You then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked… Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?’”
Abraham appeals to God’s character, not man’s merit.
John 17:11 — “Holy Father, keep them in Your name.”
Spiritual Truth: We don’t twist God’s arm — we trust God’s heart.
5) We Plead — God Heeds
Genesis 18:26–32
“And the Lord said, ‘If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.’ And Abraham answered and said, ‘Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Will You destroy the whole city for lack of five?’ And He said, ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.’ Again he spoke to Him and said, ‘Suppose forty are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of forty I will not do it.’ Then he said, ‘Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.’ He answered, ‘I will not do it, if I find thirty there.’ He said, ‘Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.’ Then he said, ‘Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.’”
Abraham pleads boldly yet humbly. He is dust, but dust can pray — and heaven listens.
John 17:20–21 — “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word…that the world may believe.”
Spiritual Truth: Bold prayers honor a big God.
6) We Pray — Then We Stay
Genesis 18:33
“And the Lord went His way, when He had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.”
Abraham prays — then trusts. He rests where God leaves him.
John 19:30 — “It is finished.”
Spiritual Truth: Faith prays — then rests. We leave the judgment and the mercy with God.
Christ Connection
Where Abraham interceded, Jesus accomplished.
Romans 8:34 — “Christ Jesus… is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”
Abraham stood before God for sinners; Jesus stands forever for us.
Abraham negotiated mercy; Jesus purchased mercy.
Application
Who is your Sodom?
- Who are you standing before God for?
- Whose name is on your heart?
- Whose soul weighs on your prayers?
Lord, burden us with what burdens You.
Prayer
Lord, give me Abraham’s heart and Christ’s compassion.
Teach me to stand before You on behalf of others.
Help me pray boldly and trust fully.
Amen.
